7 Reasons Not To Buy The 2016 Subaru WRX STI

7 Reasons Not To Buy The 2016 Subaru WRX STI. The Subaru WRX STI is an amazing car, but it does have its disadvantages. The engine (EJ257) is dated, tracing its ancestry back to 2004, with total horsepower relatively unchanged. All of the power is on the top end, there's fairly significant turbo lag, and the fuel economy is terrible. Cargo space and the fuel tank are smaller than the previous generation's hatchback, and with the new WRX performing almost equally well on the street, it's hard to justify the extra expense. Most importantly, with the 2016 Ford Focus RS around the corner, it's promising more power, less weight, and an equivalent price. Certainly worth checking out before writing a $40k check. You don't know real driving until you get turbo lag, no abs, no air bags, and no traction control. Ahahaha

Lol the Shelby GT500 gets better mileage. 15/24 if I recall correctly. Emphasis on the 24, of course.

Not as good as Evo X. End of video.

WRX fangirl reporting in: this video is awesome and he did a great job explaining his reasoning. Thanks for the vid!

Dated engine design of the much-beloved EJ and fuel economy kept me away from even considering an STI - although I wish the WRX had the DCCD.

Didn't hear a single good reason to not get an STI...you don't buy a performance awd rally car for quiet, cargo room, mpg...the "lag" and low end torque is cause its set up for balls to the wall not going for groceries...very simple tune adjustments to change that. The worst thing I heard was buying a Ford Focus...really?? Don't get me wrong...I like fords...I've owned different ones mainly mustangs. I would buy Subaru quality and resale value over any ford any day. The depreciation on a ford is pathetic.

I agree the WRX is the better buy, but I wouldn't bother comparing a Ford Focus. The interior ergonomics and headroom are both awful in that car and you're talking about a car brand that mysteriously disappears from the roads after 10 years or less. Ford durability/reliability is terrible by comparison. It's a lease-only car brand, not worth owning. There are bug-eye WRXs everywhere, even in Texas, (that's pre-2004). If you spot an equally old Ford Focus SVT or even just a Focus of the same era, it's like spotting a unicorn. I'd question anyone to think back on how often they've seen late 90's Camaros vs early 2000 Ford Focus on the road lately. There's no valid reason why a terrible 90's Camaro should be outlasting ANYTHING, but you know it's true. For that matter, there are more Dodge Neons still around than early Ford Focus... Ford has an undeserved reputation for quality and doesn't belong in a discussion with Japanese cars (except Mitsubishi).

The Ford Focus RS is totally badass, but i still choose the STI. Both cars are similarly priced, and they are the only 2 new cars i would consider buying brand new. I just want a Subie, and I live in Arkansas. I could put good use to the rally suspension and awd.

Number one: No hatchback. Done.

Good review, and many people don't realize is that although the car has 'evolved' a lot, it is nothing like '92 WRX, or '94 WRX Type RA Version STi in Japan, 20 something years ago. It was like today having a car that cost 40k, and could go toe to toe with a McLaren 650S in performance.

I went to look up STDs & found this. OMG IS IT CURABLE???

Interior noise level and fuel economy is a dealbreaker for me

theater since grave competitor opportunity universe.

I like videos who are speaking about qualities and also flaws of cars.
If we want a dickjob, we have the ENTIRE CAR PRESS for doing it. -
Ford RS? Good luck with the transmission issues.
-
they need to just make a twin turbo sti. for the price difference between the sti and the wrx I could turn the wrx into a complete monster compared to the sti. twin turbo it and upgrade the engine and it would be worth it. the sti is even more pointless now that the wrx has a 6 speed manual.

I like your videos, but come on, it's an Subaru WRX STi, there's more than seven reasons to buy it

There's enough salt in the comments section to melt all the snow outside your house. Might be able to take the S2000 out for a spin. :)
