U.S. Judge Ordered To Stop Jailing Poor People Over Court Fines A Michigan judge has been ordered by a circuit court to stop putting defendants in jail because they can’t afford to pay court fines. The district judge will now consider a defendant’s job status, assets, basic living expenses and any other special circumstances that might affect their ability to pay. The American Civil Liberties Union sued a county in Washington state Tuesday, accusing it of sending people to jail or forcing them onto work crews if they fail to pay their court fines — a practice that makes the poor poorer and amounts to a "modern-day debtors' prison," the organization said. The group's state chapter has long alleged that the Benton County District Court penalizes defendants without investigating whether they can afford to pay their fines. “Benton County is operating a well-oiled machine specifically designed to wring money out of poor people for the county’s financial benefit — and if that means people have to sit in jail or do manual labor, so be it,” ACLU Washington chapter legal director Emily Chiang said. Typically more than one-quarter of the people in the county jail are "sitting out" their fines on any given day, according to a review of jail rosters. Under the new court order, Gerds will be required to consider a defendant’s job status, earning ability, living expenses, and any special circumstances that may affect their ability to pay. As an alternative, defendants may agree to fulfill their obligations under payment plans agreed to with the court, or judges may have to craft different sentences such as community services. While incarceration starts locally in county and city jails, it of course doesn’t stop there. Research shows that even a few days in jail before trial or release can increase the likelihood of receiving a sentence of incarceration – and can increase the harshness of that sentence. The fray started last year when Lee’s Summit residents Jack and Marla Stout were accused by their neighborhood’s Home Owners Association of not having the required approval to erect a swing set. Walk through Manhattan and give something to the poor and you could end up getting arrested as well.

It would cost taxpayers less to pay the fine than to put her in jail. In jail...what good would that do for her?

Absolute BULLSHIT!!!
Can't pay, then get a fucking job.
USA needs to build work camps and make these fucker work off crimes.
So tired of this faggot liberal bullshit.
Nothing in the Constitution invalidates just punishments.
If the 8th amendment is that much of a hindrance, disavow it.
The crime rate in the USA is higher than any place on Earth.
Are you to tell me that we're to tolerate crime? Like we're forced to tolerate faggots?
Give me a break. -

Proverbs 22:22-23 "Don’t take advantage of the poor just because you can; don’t take advantage of those who stand helpless in court. The Lord will argue their case for them and threaten the life of anyone who threatens theirs."
Isaiah 1:17 "Learn to do right. See that justice is done — help those who are oppressed, give orphans their rights, and defend widows."
1 John 3:17 "Rich people who see a brother or sister in need, yet close their hearts against them, cannot claim that they love God." -
Interesting quote from Confucius, In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.

Rich people are rarely arrested in the USA and when they are it's only for show. The rich are out in an hour or so because they can afford to pay the bribes ( bail fees) immediately. They stay out of jail until found guilty, which is not often. If convicted of a major crime the rich are sent to "white collar facilities" with golf courses and spas while the poor are held in filthy, overcrowded prisons in which they must work for pennies an hour and pay for all necessities like soap and toothpaste before the case comes to trial. That may take many months. I suppose the guilty rich have complementary chocolate mints placed on their cushy cots at night while the innocent poor are punished until they plead guilty. Such a racket!

I owe $45,000 in student loans and $60,000 in medical bills. I am unemployed due to bipolar disorder. Are they going to throw me in jail for the rest of my life? I just ignore the debt, I have no will to pay a red cent to those people. I just dont have the energy to kill myself working anymore. The system sucks.
