In which John Green teaches you about American involvement in World War I, which at the time was called the Great War. They didn't know there was going to be a second one, though they probably should have guessed, 'cause this one didn't wrap up very neatly. So, the United States stayed out of World War I at first, because Americans were in an isolationist mood in the early 20th century. That didn't last though, as the affronts piled up and drew the US into the war. Spoiler alert: the Lusitania was sunk two years before we joined the war, so that wasn't the sole cause for our jumping in. It was part of it though, as was the Zimmerman telegram, unrestricted submarine warfare, and our affinity for the Brits. You'll learn the war's effects on the home front, some of Woodrow Wilson's XIV Points, and just how the war ended up expanding the power of the government in Americans' lives. To be fair America changed nothing they came in during the end and did nothing .Besides Britain were making progress through Europe that's why the Germans surrender to us not the Americans .Also what does he mean modern tech if anything Germany were producing the good stuff.

World War I broke empires. It was the end of an entire governmental methodology which we, today, consider midevil.
It was horrible, it was a tragedy, it was the loss of an entire generation of boys as soldiers, it caused problems which still echo to this very day (everything going on in the Middle East? Because of how the Ottoman Empire was carved up). The Treaty of Versailles was one of the worst and most unsustainable peace treaties in all of human history.
It also ushered in rule of law rather than rule of leader.
It also cemented the USA as a superpower because we made out like a damn bandit by selling arms. The reason the UK and France levied such harsh economic sanctions to Germany? Because they were broke trying to pay off the US. Meanwhile, the US was largely unaffected by the war, which means they were poised to stand as a great power of the world for the first time. -
America in world war 1 and is as useless as America in NATO

Actually, the Zimmerman note wasn't telling Mexico that they could get California. It was for New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

one sad thing about this time period was that almost anything German was shunned. this, in particular, led to a widespread stigma against dachshunds, which resulted in countless cases of abuse against the wiener dog. even today, many people still maintain that anti-weeny sentiment. come on guys! dachshunds are awesome!
