The market system between sellers and customers should be free from government intervention, because political and economic power is spread most efficiently through a free economic market. The more government intervention there is, the more government controls people’s lives, and the less choice there is for citizens. The origins of this liberalism lie in European political philosophy, which equates economic freedom with political freedom. it is a shame that democrats can't understand such clear logic.

Friedman was inspired by Hayek who believed that if one has to choose between free market and democracy you always go for the market even if it crushes democracy. As was the case with Augusto Pinochet in Chile who enforced the free market with death squads and was supported by not only Friedman but also by Thatcher and Reagan.

Every ne'er-do-well has a plausible deception intended to legitimize, justify and perpetuate their wrongdoing; in Mr. Friedman's case, unmitigated greed aiming to deprive the common folk of a decent life, all in the guise of merit, freedom and fair play.
