Austerity Kills: From Greece to U.S., Crippling Economic Policies Causing Global Health Crisis 1/2

http://www.democracynow.org - In their new book, "The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills," economist David Stuckler and physician Sanjay Basu examine the health impacts of austerity across the globe. The authors estimate there have been more than 10,000 additional suicides and up to a million extra cases of depression across Europe and the United States since governments started introducing austerity programs in the aftermath of the economic crisis. For example in Greece, where spending on public health has been slashed by 40 percent, HIV rates have jumped 200 percent and the country has seen its first malaria outbreak since the 1970s. An economist and public health specialist, Stuckler is a senior research leader at Oxford University. Dr. Basu is a physician and epidemiologist who teaches at Stanford University. "Had austerity been organized like a clinical trial, it would've been discontinued given evidence of its deadly side effects," Stuckler says. "There is an alternative choice that we found in the historical data and through the present recessions: When we place people and their health at the center of economic recovery, it can help get our economy back on track faster and yield lasting dividends to our society." Apparently "litwriter100" doesn't understand that all the money that we use in the modern economy doesn't actually exist. The "money" that we use is just a piece of paper that represents debt. In America the Federal Reserve Bank (which is neither a Bank nor a federal (ie. governmental) institution) creates money - some printed on paper, most only electronically - as it sees fit, and charges the federal government interest for this "service". Under this system money is already worth less than it's face value at the moment of it's creation. As convoluted as this seems, that's what our economy is based on - debt. Everything revolves around servicing our debt. When governments go into debt to produce weapons, which have no economic value, while at the same time creating a corporate welfare state, we get this cycle of economic meltdowns. On the other hand, when the government goes into debt to support education and healthcare and a social safety net, it actually creates future economic health. Certainly getting rid of the Fed would be helpful to our basic economy, but it's not the panacea that many believe it would be. The simple logic of making the wealthy and their corporations and banks pay the taxes that they should be paying and following the regulations and rules that successive neoconservative and neoliberal administrations have dismantled would help us to get our economic problems under control. Gordon Bradley's assertion is correct.

austerity is not what's killing the economy, it's simply the result of government profligacy simply put, if you keep spending what you don't ahve, you are going to end up with so much debt and fewer lenders, and you are going to have to spend less the problem is the system we have where we have a few schmucks that call themselves government and we are brainwashed into giving them limitless power bc they r going to "look after us" meanwhile those runnign the gov. ONLY LOOK AFTER THEMSEVLES!

No. That was not my point. I know your point. Thom hartmann explained it very well on YouTube. I agree with you both.

Lit100. Try to get at least a basic grasp of economics. 'Spending money that doesn't exist ? '. The central banks have been creating ' money ' out of thin air, in vast quantities, since 2007. Please give me an example of an economy that has ever cut itself to prosperity ? Its a lullaby for stupid people. That's not how it works, but its what they want you to swallow.

Austerity kills? That’s like saying tornados kill! “Austerity” means that governments are not spending money they don’t have; money that doesn’t exist. One cannot spend more than one produces indefinitely. Eventually, people will no longer lend you money because you can’t possibly pay it back or because they don’t have it themselves. This leftist mentality is attacking reality itself! It’s like trying to take up a petition outlawing tornadoes! Blame adults who never grew up. Give me!

Greed & corruption trump everything else in this world. Those that have compassion aren't the ones in charge. Humanity has much to be ashamed of, and it's damn time for all of us to realize that our politicians want us to be at each others throats while they rob us blind. Wake up people, don't let them win. It's time for all of us to take back the power. The question is, what is the best way to do that?

Austerity is war on the working class.

This is not surprising, as there are increasing problems with depression here in Ireland due, in the main, to the austerity being inflicted upon the good Irish people!
