Building Brazil - Full Episode
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In 2014, our Great Decisions episode presented Brazil as a country full of hope, both as an economic powerhouse but also as a strong democracy with an important role to play in international affairs. Fast-forward to today's corruption scandals that served as a catalyst for the dual political and economic crisis and the country is unrecognizable. From 2014: "Brazil is the “B” in the acronym BRICS, five emerging economies once seen as soon-to-be superpowers. After economic troubles in the 1990s, Brazil has risen to new global prominence—drawing in more investment, working on global issues ranging from climate change to peacekeeping, and even hosting the 2016 Olympics." I find Southern American as the land of the extreme. Especially their economic model. When the economy used the protectionist measure, it was extremely protectionist. When it adopted the open economy model, it is too open and too much privatization that it brings disastrous consequences. And some even experimented with Socialism and went too far too generous, that when the commodity boom ended, people dont have food to eat.

the Brazilian economy was a star model for all developing countries during the 60s and 70s. The Latin American Debt crisis did some damage to the region and in came those Brady Bonds. It looks partly American and partly like Kabul...especially those hill top terraced houses (FAVELA).

i'm brazilian and i've so disappointed about my country. We have high tax rates, no free market, big government, high corruption rates , high poverty rates, high violence rates, political instability ,bad income distribution, low income, high illiteracy rates, low education level, inefficient public transport, low technology, political bureaucracy, lack of public safety...
I think seriously to leave my country and look for a better place to live! -

Now it is the time to move foward....This government has now ended its cicle..time for change in order to keep on growing and getting better.
If this government continues, its growing corruption will also continues...Brazilians have to understand the shift of power from Left to Right parties every 8 years ( after two elections, 4+4) is good to the economy. It brings up diversification. Unfortunately we didn't do that last election and now with commodities in low prices, we are facing dificulties we should not be facing. -
