Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Original title: California Dreaming California is a strong brand, the state of new beginnings, dreams and movie stars, of surfers and a wonderful climate. But the Golden State is bankrupt and the city of Los Angeles is running out of cash. Public services are being cut and unemployment keeps rising. At the same time, optimism, entrepreneurship and the belief in the power of America are stronger than ever. In Los Angeles, we meet five people who are going through a transformation in their lives during this crisis. Justin and Christine lost their jobs and are now living in a van with their two young sons. Charles has gotten out of prison after fourteen years. Mizuko prepares her children for the future by making them at ease in virtual reality. Laura has taken advantage of the crisis by buying land cheaply and starting an urban farm and artists collective Fallen Fruit maps the abundant free 'public fruit' available in the city. Who are the pioneers who are reinventing the new America and how do they see the future? I love the female social worker who doesn't have any money of her own to give. But is always willing to take my money to hand out.

Very good Documentary, congratulations. I hope the situation for a least some of these people have improve. But is not only California, this is happening all over the Americas... and jobs are been outsourced to India and other countries wher people work as slaves.
-
God bless America
-
I have the same problem. and live in the UK.
-
This was a really good documentary. I think the American dream is people coming together to help each other instead of stepping on each other to get ahead, like when 911 happened in NYC people came together. In California when the dot com bubble crashed people like here came together. Materialism and selfishness are killing us..
-
Where will it end?
-
This is what happens when you have massive welfare and socialist programs coupled with Unions.
-
This is a great documentary. You begin to rethink the american dream. It's still there, but the parameters are different.

if L.A. is running out of money just go over to Rancho Park golf course and collect the green fees seven days a week. problem solved
-
Hang on a minute - the guy living on that blue-ish bus is (was) a software engineer and cannot find a job in California?
-
Hey Cali...yoo hoo...time to wake up...kill your public sector unions...before they KILL YOU.
-
Why don't these people just move somewhere else. California is a total shithole.
-
Very sad! Well the Clintons made a big mistake in americas history!
-
I wished I wasn't so judgmental - I know it's just a part of being human, being a part of society, to put people into boxes, to have lots of presumptions, to oversimplify things when trying to make sense of complex issues... but boy It dawned on me again, that everybody has their struggles - we're all equal in that

This recession hit us like nothing in history (even in Silicon Valley, which was the area most resistant to recession, in America). Americans are a resilient people though and we keep reinventing ourselves.
-
This is happening everywhere and if it's not, it soon will be. This is what happens when you outsource jobs to third world countries.
-
That s the way Capitalism it s in order to succeed and live good life you must be the best , smart, creative and competitive . Only the strong survive..
-

Why waste so much time profiling a guy who is obviously not terribly intelligent, and a criminal?
