Can the US learn from Germany?

As the US economy continues to struggle, should the States should look abroad for ideas on how to get out of the hole? Thom Hartman, host of RT's The Big Picture, says that despite a huge tax burden, Germany's economy is thriving. What can America learn from them? Hartman says that, for starters, Reaganomics must at long last be retired and money, no matter where it comes from, needs to be spent. Follow Lucy on Twitter at http://twitter.com/lucykafanov

2 things I like to add: tax rate might be higher in Germany, but free education, health care and pensions are included. Plus when people are on "Kurzarbeit" they also take a pay cut, but can keep their jobs. The German economy bounced back quickly not because the spending power of workers, but the Germany companies could handle the rising demand and gained extra market shares, because they still.had the capacities and people. No need to retire and retrain workers.

What a typical professor. Just memorize the txt book. What about 1921-1923??? After Wilson's spending in 8 years created 200% inflation.
Germany is rich because of a TRADE SURPLUS. Sure spend as much as u want as long as it's not more than you take in. What a joke this guy is -
The streets here in Germany are horrible for disabled people.
We put them in the hospital and solve nothing.
Drunks are put Into the hospitals as well.

Germany is following the global agenda making the rich richer and destroying the middle class. Especially under Merkel. Who started this down spiral was Schröder a social democrat. Why is Germany still a big competitor in world markets, because they set up a huge low wages program when they switched the Mark to the Euro. Otherwise they would have been able to sell their product to poor Europe countries like Spain, Italy, Greece, etc... By doing this they destroyed the export economy of these countries. I wouldn't use Germany as role model I would rather learn from mistakes the did to their electorates.

Hi, I am Jochen from Germany. German reality is a lot different. The facts and statistics you are presented here, are simply not correct. This is not because of bad journalism, rather because of manipulated statistics by german government:
• Our unemployment rate is MUCH higher. There are several programs initiated by the german government, that take people out of the statistics, though they do earn nothing or just 1 Dollar and 13 Cent per hour. But to be fair: there do exist help-programms that support unemployed to learn different jobs and people get welfare in Germany on top of (small) payed flats. Probably all governments manipulate the unemployment stats - the question is, how far they go. Amazingly the german unemployment rate decreased right in the financial crisis after 2008!?
• Yes, taxes are incredibly high for citizens. Not for companies! As an employee in Germany you know, that you can divide your gross income in half. But: the 50% do only concern employees and include social insurances like: health insurance, accident insurance, long term care insurance, unemployment insurance and old age insurance. Young working persons are absolutely cheated, because they will not get much money back, because the now older people had such a comfortable postwar period and spent already the money of the future generations' old age insurances. The young will have to work until 70 or more, before they get their pension. The current retirement age for persons of my age (45) ist 67, 70 is the current demand of politicians, although it is hard to keep a job, when you#re older than 50. In comparison: In Belgium the retirement age is 63 and in France it is 65 in very similar systems. Besides: You have to pay church taxes, if you do not exit church-membership.
• Short Work does not mean full payment. THE MONEY OF WORKERS DID CHANGE EXTREMELY! And people spent less money.
Short working money amounts 60% of the common wage (as an exception and according to having children sometimes 67%). Only the companies are supported (as most of the time). In some cases short work meant: full work, 60% payment, or losing your job, if you revolt.
-> German Reality is:
• Poverty grows - especially at children
• People do work very very much, do unpaid overtime, come to work sick, because of the high pressure and real unemployment
• Infrastructure in Germany is in a disastrous condition in many areas, not in East Germany, as one could expect. There the Infrastructure is mostly quite modern. Germans have paid trillions of taxes to the ministry of transport over the years and half of the roads are bad and 80% of the (road-) bridges are not usable at a speed over 40 mph, otherwise they would break down. The government simply did not spent the money for transportation purposes in the last 30 years - they misappropriated it. Now they want more money, to pay the modernization of infrastructure. In 1991 Germany introduced a "temporary" solidarity tax of first 7.5% then 5.5% on wages (on top!) to build up East-Germany. It should last until 1995. But we still pay this tax(!), because it was extended. Now that the last extension ends, the german governments still wants to keep it - why not keep on driving home 15 billion Euros every year?
• Public baths and circulating libraries close, because communities have no money. Most of the german communities are indebted, because we have the so called "Föderalsystem", that means that the States are independent of the country, but they have to follow the rules from Berlin. In the end, that means: The country has money, the state does not and the community are bankrupt (with the exception of some eastern Communities, that were built up by the solidarity tax, that sold most of their real estate after renovation).
• The so called good german economy is based on the fact, that people work much more than in the past and than their next neighbors (I do not want to insult our neighbors, quite the contrary). The government accepts an exploding status of employee's illness (like burn out) for an effect, that cannot last. This procedure is shortsighted and only focussed on the next election. -

Only bad thing in Germany is high fuel prices...All other things are same or even better than US.

I am german and i noticed that alot of videos talking about Germany people comment under it that Germany is so great and that America sucks. Most of those are germans themselves and that kinda upsets me that people hate so much on america while they kinda safed our ass from comunism after WW II. America did a lot of shit but without them Germany wouldnt be so great like it is today.

There is just one disease in almost every German home.....the television Program
PS: do not watch any type of RTL....Germans will know what i mean -
they can, but the us doesn't want to. As long as the rich are taking care of, that's all what counts.
-
Germany nearly always has a trade surplus and the USA has had a trade deficit for years. This is because Germany is a huge industrial nation and Germany takes the gold medal in innovation.
Despite the fact that the US industry is less innovative and lacks the knowledge the Germans have they are still richer. ( and money counts ) -
1:13 What a shamefull presentation of 29.4% and 50.9%
