China and Democracy
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
A session from the 2012 Aspen Ideas festival. In much of the world, China is admired—or feared—as the rising new model of economic achievement under ruthlessly effective government direction. In the eyes of many others, the Chinese model is increasingly showing its contradictions and limits: economic, environmental, social, and political. Two of the world's leading exponents of these respective views discuss where they disagree, and why—and what the next stage is most likely to hold for the world's most populous and (until recently) fastest-growing nation Speakers: Eric X. Li, Minxin Pei, James Fallows

Democracies have killed more people in the last century (Two world wars , Korea . Vietnam, Iraq , Libya Syria and many more ) compare that with Chinese system . China will come out the winner.
Historically too China has been the Largest economy of the World for 1800 years till 18th century and will regain that position in two decades -
Beware of trolls from the 50 Cent army, paid Chinese trolls who are paid 50 cents per comment on these forums.

Asking USA to change its political system is harder than asking China to changed into a Democratic system overnight.

Elected through lies? Guess he didn't expect Trump...

This kind of PR function for China doesn't work at all! Why university professors and high school teachers in China classrooms cannot criticize their government? They get punishment if they do that. Limiting Chinese people mind thinking is blocking China from developing! China was the greatest economy with greatest military power and greatest infrastructures on earth during Emperor Qin Shihuang 200B.C. What's the difference between now and 200B.C.? China dreams for going back to 200B.C.? There is no freedom of speech and freedom of press in China. People cannot speak out beyond the line CCP drawn. That means no one can summarize all problems and risks. So, the biggest problem is no one knows how bad the situation is when all problems add together. Don't fool people , democracy without freedom of speech ? PRC constitution called China as democratic China. If democracy is not valid in China, then PRC constitution is void! Is that rule of law?

One can not impose Democracy upon the Chinese people it has to come from within through the Taoist philosophy of dualism.

Minxin Pei was taking a cheap shot when he said that many Chinese coming to US. That had nothing to do with democracy. Mexico is a democracy, and many many Mexicans were and are coming to US either legally or illegally. What does democracy have to do with it?

As a Chinese living in democratic North America for three decades, I agree with his views about political systems in China and in the world. Chinese current one-party system is nothing superior, but it is optional for China. China is a very different civilization from the western countries, as unique and complex as its language. China needs big government. The Chinese people depend on their governments to lead and govern. The governing CCP has been quite vigilant in self observation and self correction, and it gets things done very efficiently meanwhile effectively serving their long-term vision. It is the best driving force supported by its people. As for the westerners, if you feel troubled embracing it, at least let it be. You are not really in a position to judge it. With regard to freedom of speech, it has been a complicated subject for me. I do enjoy the freedom of speech myself, but I also understand that its limitation is necessary for China. The Chinese takes words (or speech) way too seriously so it can be very harmful. American news media like CNN or talk show hosts may all share such experiences: don't make jokes about the Chinese or they all come out the next day to protest. A rap song that entertains us could make so many Chinese angry. The words just weight so much more to them. Yea, I say them because I don't share the same feeling, but I do understand. The total freedom of speech may be harmful to the social stability of China and social stability is essential to the sustainable growth of Chinese economy. All I suggest Is to keep an open mind about China, nothing scary really even though unfamiliar.

Another 4 years have passed, idont see china' government collapse.

Democracy and china's system are both flawed and this system came from people's idea so i'am sure there can be a better system. And to those people who criticize china's system try to understand how our system works before you blabber bullshits.
-
to understand china people should try to understand china and not look at a western perspective.
-
Eric Li breeds out a new paradigm in political science whereas a conventional idea tends to dichotomize democracy and dictatorship.
-
This guy, Minxin, never respects the indigenous system of Chinese government and likes to apply a typical western point of view to analyse the political system in China.
-
I quite disagree with Minxin Pei that, when the per capita income rises to a level, the political system in China would change to a multi party format otherwise a political crisis might happen. The way he think is too much influenced by western ideas.

Everyone wants a good quality democracy...
But nowadays democracy in some countries are acting very very bad resulted from economic issues that poor economy leads to poor people leads to poor democracy.
