China is 5,000 years old if we start counting from the existence of Emperor Yan and Yellow Emperor 炎帝黄帝 and Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors 三皇五帝. It's just the village you went to might not be that old even though buildings look rundown. Just a friendly clarification. Chinese call themselves Descendants of Emperors Yan and Huang 炎黄子孙 and their culture the Civilization of Hua Xia 华夏民族, with the Xia referring to the earliest dynasty of China, the Xia Dynasty (2070 -- 1600 B.C.). I am German and I find it really funny what is considered old and ancient in China. The oldest church in my city was built in the 1200s and is in perfect condition. My parents house was built in 1780, and that is not even old for a private house. There are much older buildings.
And consider that Germany got bombed so hard in WW2 and after the war the Soviets let a lot of buildings collaps in east Germany (lucky the western allies didn't do that). -

I'll be happy there in China but I'm vegetarian. so can't be there. I guess people don't notice when you say "there are some blah blah ancient places in China". Come to Suzhou there are many lovely old, hundred(s) year garden places. I don't think the word ancient would apply though. Almost all the buildings on historical sites have been reconstructed.
