China overtakes Japan as No. 2 economy

Japan lost its 42-year-long ranking as the world's second-biggest economy to China in 2010, with data on Monday showing a contraction in the last quarter due to weak consumer spending and a strong yen. AFPTV spoke to Jean-François Huchet, director of the French Centre for Research on Contemporary China in Hong Kong, about China's continued economic rise.Duration: 02:17

if gdp is measured in energy units, then China has the largest GDP for the last 100 years.

Actually the GDP is simply the price (or market value) of finished products. In a country like China with a huge population, naturally labour costs are lower (since more resources = cheaper costs). Lower labour costs means lower cost of production which then equates to lower pricing of goods. Hence over GDP is comparative with countries like Japan where the cost of production and final products pricing is higher.

1) China took over Japan as the second biggest economy before the tsunami disaster (look at the dates). 2) It would be fair to say that both Chinese and Japs are more clever and contributed more to the world than flips like yourself can ever dream of.
