But this once booming supplier of cheap goods is now seeing factories close their doors and workers fired and sent back to their poor villages. This is the most difficult time Ive ever seen says the owner of a watch factory in business for 30 years. Its even bleaker for workers. If an employer doesnt want to pay compensation for a dismissal they just reduce our pay and keep us hanging on says one victim of the closure of 2000 factories. Deputy Mayor Jiang Ling is confident that the citys appeal to rich people to invest and poor people to work will ensure that it weathers the economic storm. But the 2 million migrant workers making the long trip home from Dongguan this month, are not so sure. In 2008 to 2009, when the U S financial crisis happened, the United States of America was bringing down the worldwide economies down with her because the U S financial institutes( U S banks and U S investment bankers) sold toxic (worthless) financial assets around the world, when this documentary was filmed.

I laugh at the really cocky comment made by the deputy mayor concerning the rich and the poor. If business is down, then jobs are lost. The whole city could shut down for good if business and trade does not exist. The rich are indifferent to the market if the market is flat. They simply won't do business if there is little demand for cheap goods....

Not firing unneeded workers is not only about avoiding redundancy (unemployment) payments....increasing unemployment is a Party no-no for the stability obsessed CCP any year... 2009 or 2016...unless approved by Beijing that also finds it difficult to fire overcapacity SOE workers even with huge government unemployment payments...

Every product that the Chinese make means they have put somebody else out of business somewhere else in the world because 20 years ago they basically exported nothing , so all this money is being sucked into China and the country where the business went broke is not earning , so blind Freddy can see where it is heading , eventually nobody will have any money to buy their junk as the Chinese do not buy they only sell , the British had this problem with them which brought about the opium wars , America now has this problem to the tune of 500 billion trade deficit every year , the Chinese think that they are going to rule the world , so did japan in 1939 and again in 1972 , and very soon all the chickens will come home to roost as they have reached the pump priming stage to keep the economy going the same as Japan started 20 years ago after their bank implosion from property speculation , nothing lasts and this massive Communist subsidized manufacturing thing is a great big Ponzi scheme waiting to collapse as market forces will eventually prevail , which they don't believe in as they are a command economy .
