China, Trump, and the U.S.-Sino Relationship

Professor Roach, Professor Shiller and Mr. Lei Zhang '02 MBA will talk about US-Sino relationship in the current global economic and political environment, and its future in Trump era. The event will be a panel discussion, followed by a Q&A session. Robert J. Shiller is Sterling Professor of Economics, Department of Economics and Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, Yale University, and Professor of Finance and Fellow at the International Center for Finance, Yale School of Management. He received his B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1967 and his Ph.D. in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1972. He has written on financial markets, financial innovation, behavioral economics, macroeconomics, real estate, statistical methods, and on public attitudes, opinions, and moral judgments regarding markets. He has been research associate, National Bureau of Economic Research since 1980, and was co-organizer of NBER workshops. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with Eugene Fama and Lars Peter Hansen in 2013. He served as Vice President of the American Economic Association, 2005 and President of the Eastern Economic Association, 2006-07, and President of the American Economic Association for 2016. Stephen Roach is a Senior Fellow at Yale University’s Jackson Institute of Global Affairs and a Senior Lecturer at Yale’s School of Management. He was formerly Chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia and the firm’s Chief Economist for the bulk of his 30-year career at Morgan Stanley, heading up a highly regarded team of economists around the world. Mr. Roach’s current teaching and research program focuses on the impacts of Asia on the broader global economy. At Yale, he has introduced new courses for undergraduates and graduate students on the “The Next China” and “The Lessons of Japan.” His writing and research also addresses globalization, trade policy, the post-crisis policy architecture, and the capital markets implications of global imbalances. Lei Zhang is the founder, chair, and CEO of Hillhouse Capital Management Group, Ltd. Before attending Yale, where he earned both an M.B.A and an M.A. in international relations in 2002, Mr. Zhang received his B.A. in economics from Renmin University of China. Today he serves as vice chairman and trustee of the board of Renmin. Mr. Zhang has also served on the boards of several of Asia’s leading companies, including JD.com, Qunar, and the Indonesian media conglomerate MNC Global Mediacom. He is a governing board member of the China-United States Exchange Foundation and serves on the Hong Kong Financial Services Development Council as well as the Steering Group on Financial Technologies. He has also established the Gaoli Academy at Renmin University with the purpose of expanding the role of liberal arts education in Chinese universities. Mr. Zhang was appointed Successor Trustee of Yale Corporation in 2016.
