Communists, Nationalists, and China's Revolutions: Crash Course World History #37

Don't forget! Crash Course posters and t-shirts at http://store.dftba.com/collections/crashcourse In which John Green teaches you about China's Revolutions. While the rest of the world was off having a couple of World Wars, China was busily uprooting the dynastic system that had ruled there for millennia. Most revolutions have some degree of tumult associated with them, but China's 20th century revolutions were REALLY disruptive. In 1911 and 1912, Chinese nationalists brought 3000 years of dynastic rule to an end. China plunged into chaos as warlords staked out regions of the country for themselves. The nationalists and communists joined forces briefly to bring the nation back together under the Chinese Republic, and then they quickly split and started fighting the Chinese Civil War. The fight between nationalists and communists went on for decades, and was interrupted by an alliance to fight the invading Japanese during World War II. After the World War II ended, the Chinese Civil War was back on. Mao and the communists were ultimately victorious, and Chiang Kai-Shek ended up in Taiwan. And then it got weird. Mao spent years repeatedly trying to purify the Communist Party and build up the new People's Republic of China with Rectifications, Anti Campaigns, Five Year Plans. the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolution. These had mixed results, to say the least. John will cover all this and more in this week's Crash Course World History. I learnt more in this video than my entire Chinese history course...

I am half Chinese. My grandparents was beat and sent to a concentration camp by the order of Mao Ze Dong. So I am not a big fan of Mao Ze Dong. Random thing, my mother and grandparents as well as aunts and uncles are from Guangdong Province.

In Chinese ,there is a word 中庸,which means “middle of the road”,english is hard to translate this deep and old concept. which means at least it works, we can adjust ,not just we need everyone to vote for the president ..I think communist is just a regime for now ,it still works as the ancient china ,as same as some of east countries .
Actually the fast speed of development came from the same regime in Korea and HK and Taiwan, now they began to collapse because of democracy, but Singapore ,still booming ..
China is more like a 400 times of Singapore . -
Do more videos on China!! Lots of interesting stuff like the time the communists had to meet on a boat in the middle of nowhere to avoid being broken up, the time everyone was so scared to tell Mao his modernization plan was too ambitious and like 30 million people died in 3 years, the time 73 year old Mao did barrel rolls in the Yangtze River to show everyone how yoked he was, the time all the middle and high schoolers were crazy for old-man Mao and rebelled in the ultimate, most violent and disruptive act of teen rebellion ever, the time Chinese people invented kites to scare enemies during battle, and stuff like that. If you're interested in an intern please message me pretty please with a cherry on top

"you got to vote, but there is only one option."
democratic dictatorship you really are the best -
There are so many things that CCP and Guomindang(KMT) agree on, like Taiwan it's a one province of China, Taiwan is not a country and it should never be. Know why Youtube is banned there in China? Too many jokes here:)

I used to hate Mao. But now being a politics major student, I would not be that critical on him. By cruelly make people equally poor, it is the massive cheap labour which boost Chinese economy at first. And by getting rid of classes and brainwashing the public with socialist dream, China during last decades have bought opportunities for everyone to climb from bottom although now we have classes.

But the Internet block doesn't work very well
hahahahaha... -
The Communists did not exactly 'fight' the Japanese. Perhaps why there were fewer defeats of the Communists by the Japanese, allowing their prestige to not take a hit like the other groups.

It wasn't just a break-up
It was a massacre. -

Its amazing, these stories about Mao. Here in Africa with our anti-imperialistic thinking, Mao's China is seen in a way way more positive light. So many credit his communist ideas, central planning and the cultural revolution leading to better saving, as keys to their abilities to experience rapid growth and become a world power in 20 years. But there's India and with crash course, I now understand that this happened at least 3 times before this time. But I guess, when you come from an under-performing country like Nigeria where corruption, tribal conflict and poor government administration has threatened growth and development for decades, coupled with the fact that a lot of Nigerians in Nigeria are not so knowledgeable about world history from a political or economic perspective, its easier to create myths. I just hope we don't try to recreate the myth over here.

Might be a good video if u didn't act like a jerkoff

The thing that pains me the most is that there are people who watch this video who will still believe at the end of it that Hitler was the most evil man in the world, even though Hitler's entire legacy was built around stopping communism.

I have to mention the government actually built a super powerful firewall! It doesn't just ban Youtube, but also bans a lot of foreign porn websites including tumblr! WTF! The good thing is now I am in US and I can watch porn easily.

Democracy currently doesn't apply to China because firstly people generally don't have a good education and a good living standards compared with other advanced countries . If they were granted votes, China would be India right now. Even in some respects it would be worse. China would be teared into pieces, Tibet and Xinjiang or Inner Mongolia would vote for leaving China, maybe they become allies of America to contain China instead. In addition, China would be going back to warring times, warlords sharing the whole China. All in all, China needs to await democracy before the modernization and civilization develop very well.
