Democracy, Authoritarian Capitalism, and China: Crash Course World History 230
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In which John Green teaches you about the end of World History, and the end of the world as we know it, kind of. For the last hundred years or so, it seemed that one important ingredient for running an economically successful country was a western-style democratic government. All evidence pointed to the idea that capitalist representative democracies made for the best economic outcomes. It turns out that isn't the only way to succeed. In the last 40 years or so, authoritarian capitalism as it's practiced in places like China and Singapore has been working really, really well. John is going to look at these systems and talk about why they work, and he's even going to make a few predictions about the future. Also, thanks for watching this series. It has been amazingly fun to create, and we appreciate all of you. Citation 1: John Micklethwait & Adrian Woolridge. The Fourth Revolution: The Global Race to Reinvent the State. Really funny that you take the USA as an example for democracy. A two party system where a small number of members decide who is going to be the one the population can elect. Where elections are not direct, equal representation is not available, where the gouvernment cannot fall, and parliament can only control the budget. Where people have to register to vote. Etc, etc....
Where the one who gets 52% of the votes looses from the one that gets only 45%
Wow...
'The West', 'Western civilization' and 'Western democracy' are much bigger and better. -

Well... we do have a few state-owned companies in Quebec, mainly Hydro-Québec for electricity and the Société des Alcool du Québec or SAQ. They're doing fairly well for our provincial government ( I can't speak for the other provinces because I'm not quite sure they have similar entities ).

I can't believe I only just figured out why there's a "me from the past" John Green. It's because it's written by him and his old history teacher, and the "me from the past" is supposed to be him when he was in his history teacher's class.
I mean, I always knew both of those things but I never thought to put two and two together. -
1. I have to point out key differences between Singapore and China. Singapore does NOT have censorship, the press are privately owned. In China all media are government owned. To get around China's internet censorship you will have to use VPN access.
2. Singapore has elections. China does NOT have elections. It is just that People's action party always win in Singapore. singapore Does Have a opposition party.
If China were to allow the things that singapore allows, I am pretty sure the communist party would still win majority of the votes, but nature of communist party would be very different. It would be a much more responsive and inclusive political party. -
I want to see you do a episode on pope nicholas v.

Too bad you didn't hit Trump with that computer. Great info to contextualize current hubbub about diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
-
China needs a communist revolution.

Nothing better to have a mentor that encourages you and open your mind about the choices you have to make, impart you with the profound realization that choices in the present greatly affect the future and the past for better and for worse. You and me as a part of the greater society called human beings have an important part to play in this stage called humanity.

Why do people (including John) confuse what they think is Democracy, when in reality that's what a Republic is. The US in not a Democracy, it has always been a Republic. Democracy is evil.

Almost every cirque of China's political system you made can apply in differing degrees to the U.S. and its just strait up delusional to claim otherwise.
