Dilip Ratha: The hidden force in global economics: sending money home
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In 2013, international migrants sent $413 billion home to families and friends — three times more than the total of global foreign aid (about $135 billion). This money, known as remittances, makes a significant difference in the lives of those receiving it and plays a major role in the economies of many countries. Economist Dilip Ratha describes the promise of these “dollars wrapped with love” and analyzes how they are stifled by practical and regulatory obstacles. I see communities in my state made up of one migrant group or another and those communities are failing or becoming ghettos. I believe a main reason is because those migrant workers are making money in a community and sending their extra money out of the country instead of spending it in the places they live. Does anybody else think this is a huge problem for countries around the world?

If he mentions the telecommunication companies, most revolutions in that industry have been caused by unconventional measures like Viber, etc. So does that mean bitcoin is the new, revolutionary way of remittance?

I am glad he talked about the exploitation of workers in Dubai. An entire Ted talk should be devoted to that. It really is inhuman.

The last few sentences resonate how I feel, as a finishing undergraduate foreign student in USA.

Half of the comments I read hear talks about Bitcoin. Guess what almost all countries he mentioned here does not even know the existence of Bitcoin, let alone using it. He is talking about places with out even the access for cellphones, how is it possible to use Bitcoins there. Although, Bitcoin is the future, we are not there yet, may be in 15 years.
