This is a bundle of misinformation. The socialist reforms and social system of france didn't start with mitterand. Heck, he betrayed his voters with half-assed reforms and had to co-exist with a right-wing government during his latter year's mandate (Government Chirac I-II)
These reforms began in 1936 with the Matignon Accords(40h work week), they were followed by the reforms of the resistance council the 'CNR' (birth of the french nanny state, nationalisations..) and the Grenelle accords following may 1968 (raise of minimum wage and creation of the CE). They're the result of a long fight through the century for their implementations and that is why some peoples concider it as part of our culture.

Clearly.. American liberals AND conservatives are unable to see the difference between their arse and a hole in the wall. Social democracy and socialism have nothing to do with each other apart from the original source. Europe's social democracies have sometimes even freer economies than the U.S.A but with healthcare and a welfare state set up by either the state, a national insurance or mutual assistance funds. Socialism is essentially what you have in Cuba: state-ownership over all the means of production and a dictatorship "of the proletariat" (which in reality is one over the proletariat by a corrupt clique of party officials). Europeans like me are beginning to get really tired of explaining this --- a European conservative.

France is not a model of socialism because she is not socialist. The means of production aren't owned by the state nor are commonly owned. Just because a modern western European democracy offers universal healthcare, and free-turition tertiary education, does not mean it's socialist.
