Douglas Beal: An alternative to GDP that focuses on wellbeing, not just wealth
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Most economists agree that GDP, the most widely used measure of a country’s success and growth, is a poor indicator of the overall wellbeing of a nation. Doug Beal created an alternative index that measures not just wealth but wellbeing. The new gauge takes into account such factors as income equality, sustainability and education. Beal shares insights on the development of the index and reveals how it offers a new perspective on which countries are the real winners and losers in the global economy. TED@BCG was a TED-curated event featuring a diverse group of speakers from across the BCG community. Jointly produced by TED and BCG, the event put a spotlight on ideas, projects and insights that will contribute to the pursuit of growing ever onward and upward. About the TED Institute: We know that innovative ideas and fresh approaches to challenging problems can be discovered inside visionary companies around the world. The TED Institute helps surface and share these insights. Every year, TED works with a group of select companies and foundations to identify internal ideators, inventors, connectors, and creators. Im Polish and all of this is bullcrap. I recently read an article saying tht 50% of Poles cannot afford unexpected expense of 250 Euros( 1000 in Polish currency). It really sucks in here, and our ex prime minister Donald Tusk should be in jail in my opinion. Llike dozen polish watergate scandals came up in last 2-3 years. For example, bunch of top men from government were eavesropped and they said stuff like "Poland exists only theoretically" or "we're doing blowjobs to Americans when it comes to foreign policy" - nobody bats an eye. Or recently our president (he used to be in Tusk's party) was nos reelected and when leaving his residency he took with him all the stuff that was there like furniture, or lamps, ipads, couch, stereo, TV, a kettle, trash bin(!) so his opponent who's moving in has nothing. Or when he ( Bronislaw Komorowski) once was in Japan he would shout to his companion "come here shogun!" and he was in a parliment or something and he stood on a freakin chair (in Japan's parliment!!). And then during campaign people used to dress up like ninjas and take chairs whenever he was giving a speech, one guy was thrown to jail for shouting "come here shogun!" and waving a chair. I could go like that forever but in general - Poland is not improving, like 2 bilion young Poles emmigrated since we joined Soviet (European) Union, like 30% or maybe 50% is planning to leave (me too), politicians only care about polls, media and newspapers are full of lies and cover up stories. Today there are parlimentar elections (sorry for english) and PiS (law and justice) is going to win, I hope something will change, maybe they will lower the taxes, and maybe we finally stop doing blowjobs to germany.
