A panel discussion at the eighth annual Nelson Institute Earth Day Conference, on April 22 in Madison, Wis., exploring future constituencies for environmental action. The panel included Nelson Institute Director Paul Robbins; China Miéville, award-winning science fiction author and associate professor of creative writing, Warwick University; Sarah Moore, assistant professor of geography, UW-Madison; Ariane de Bremond, research assistant professor of geographical sciences, University of Maryland; Monica White, assistant professor of environmental justice, UW-Madison; Erle Ellis, associate professor, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and senior fellow, The Breakthrough Institute; and Kevin Noone, director of the Swedish Secretariat for Environmental Earth System Sciences at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. The conference, titled Earth: To Be Determined, explored ideas and issues related to the Anthropocene — the age of humans — a term many scientists are using to describe the profound impact people are having on the global environment by adding greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, converting land to human uses and consuming natural resources.
