Electric Cars Could Wreak Havoc on Oil Markets Within a Decade
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
February 24 -- There are more than one billion cars on the road worldwide today, and only one tenth of one percent of them have a plug. OPEC contends that even in the year 2040, EVs will make up just one percent. But don't be so sure. By 2020, some electric cars and SUVs will be faster, safer, cheaper, and more convenient than their gasoline counterparts. What if people just stop buying oil? In the first episode of our animated series, Sooner Than You Think, Bloomberg's Tom Randall does the math on when oil markets might be headed for the big crash. Like this video? GO TESLA GOOOOOOOO

Things can go fast. I think China will lead the way on electrification. At least I hope they will.
-
It says china will still use gasoline??? They are the ones pushing electric! If not for China the US would hold pack technology for the next hundred years (ever seen Who Killed the Electric Car?)... Just search for "Chinese Electric cars" They are way ahead of us...
-
good riddance to the oil industry :)
-
Which is why the US government needs to do everything it can to quicken he commercial development of molten salt reactors for the production of electricity. (Before China or India both of who are currently ahead of the US). The NRA needs to redefine regulation of nuclear industry to safety objectives rather than physical requirements only applicable to current water reactors. Then let some of America's brightest engineers commercially develop molten salt reactors to supply clean electrical energy cheaper than current coal or natural gas power plants.

why?, electric cars are just polluted as gasoline car. The power of marketing....
-
Yet its a pain to see most car companies stil spending billions on developing new gasoline cars instead of focusing on EVs and green energy. I hope no one buy's an EV which is not made by Tesla, atleast to teach those corrupt and decieving car companies a lesson.
-
Guys make a difference buy a tesla or bolt or any EVs, install solar roof tops, switch to LEDs, switch off ac when not needed, use warm clothes not heater in winter...
-
Electric Motors* not engines
-
As a Chevy Volt owner, I have to tell you the FU factor as I sail by gas stations puts a big shit eating grin on my face. Necx vehicle will a Bolt, sooner than later.
-
There will be an oil crisis by 2020 because half of all cars produced then will be electric. It will be cheaper to buy and maintain an electric car then. By 2040, all cars produced then will be electric, gasoline cars will be found in museums and kept by car enthusiasts as vintage cars

I fail to see the point of an electric car when my current hybrid gets 60mpg and can travel 700miles on one tank. I purchased it used for $4000 dollars. Electric cars are for yuppies. The automakers should focus more on ultra efficient hybrids in my opinion.
-
...and electric cars aren't silent at all. As soon as they're moving faster than a bicycle, the tyre noise is the dominant noise source (same applies for modern quiet petrol engine cars - it's not the engine that's noisy).

Actually, peak oil is very real - it has to be... think about it for a second. No new oil is being made, we're just extracting the crappiest leftovers only while prices are high. We certainly have reached peak cheap oil and fracking, tar sands, etc. only make economic sense when oil prices are high. But when oil prices are high, economies falter... and then the price drops, and fracking isn't viable. Rinse & repeat. Market volatility very nicely demonstrates how we're hitting the limits. Call it peak oil, or whatever, it's the same process.

OPEC is deluding themselves. Out of necessity we will change to electric cars far sooner. My personal estimate is 50% of new cars will be electric before 2030 and as early as 2025. That is what we need to reach. a few months ago I realized what a waste it would be to buy a new gasoline car even today. By 2025 who would want a second hand petrol car? Resale figures from them will crash big time by 2025.

Oh my god....Tesla made a profit this quarter!
-
The numbers here are out dated. Tesla will make and sell 500,000 by 2018. Two years earlier. In addition the M3 is soon out so as the Bolt. So the bottom line is that we confidently shift the 2023 to 2020.

Excellent points. By the way, electric vehemently have [electric] motors not engines.
