What are your thoughts about current EU monetary policy and the quantitative easing embarked on by the ECB? Chris Bailey - an Economist and Ex-fund manager comments What do you think about Europe as a place to invest money? Is Europe still a compelling place or is it? If everyone owes trillions I still haven't a clue who anyone actually owes it to. Is it Warren Buffet? If you look at the quantitative easing around the world one could say that it has been quite successful in stabilising underlying economies and clearly this has had a very positive effect on the stock markets. But quantitative easing is not a solution for everything. For instance in Japan they've had QE for the best part of a generation and they are still struggling. For European the critical debate is not just quantitative easing but also about enacting supply side reforms (labour market / flexibility reforms..etc) in order to take full advantage of it and not enter the same trap of Japan. As a result of the intervention people have got very low interest rates. While one enjoys low interest payments on mortgages and any other debt we've got, the reality is that we're not making much much on our savings. And in reality there are more savers than borrowers but there aren't many alternatives. There was too much debt in European Union economies in 2008.
