Subscribe for new episodes every Wednesday! http://bit.ly/SubToEC Every quest reward or sellable item in an MMO generates more gold that goes into the economy, causing inflation as the gold becomes more common and less valuable. There are several ways that MMOs can drain that money out of the economy by creating "gold sinks." ___________ Many thanks to Nick for the guest art! In Warframe, the cash is usable to upgrade stuff.
The real, valuable cash is "Platinum", which is used to buy stuff from the store, AND is tradeable.
So Platinum doesnt inflate, and is tradeable for items like parts of "Warframes" or other awesome stuff.
Platinum can only be gotten by buying it, or trading for it, and trading for it is way better, so nearly no one buys it, just as nearly no one spends it in the store, so it never really inflates. -
Lol, that tie.

This reminds me of when you could get almost any non legend for a Wimpod on the GTS when Sun and Moon came out. Allowed me to finish the Pokedex in a week.

I think that an in-game casino would be a good money sink since you'll have a ton of players putting thousands of gold into it but it also has the risk of backfiring horribly
-
i dont even play MMOs and i'm not that into economics but for some reason I find this topic really interesting and would like to see more on it.
-
MapleStory got a really bad economy.
stuff that used to worth 1m when i played it now costs 999m.
when i helped my bro with this game i saw someone on the free market say "hold on i need to get more cash from my other account, this one is full" -
Please do this topic again.

I know that this is old video, but I just wanted to point out that in 1:24 Extra Credits said that goverment controls the money supply, but in reality the federal reserve and almost every other central bank are privately owned entities that the goverments have no control of.
Just wanted to tell that peace -
Ship death in Eve is not a money sink, it's a faucet. Since all ships in eve are manufactured by players, the money paid for the ship is still in the economy. (In the pockets of the guy you bought it from). When your ship explodes in eve, the only thing that leaves the economy are the minerals used to build it. These minerals are an infinite resource that spawn into the world daily.
On top of this, the vast majority of ships in eve are "insured" with an NPC corporation that pays the player a value somewhat close to the market value of the ship. This money is created out of thin air, injecting new money into the economy.
EVE does have some good money sinks (like skill book purchase and some other things) but the "death penalty" is not a money sink, it's the exact opposite. This is widely understood by the eve player base. -
And then there's Gaia Online who has an item that can recolour any item once...
