A sort of perfect storm of events, it combined the continuing decline of America's manufacturing base and the oil shocks of 1973 and 1979, and brought about an stagnant economy, paired with high inflation. Economists with a flair for neologisms and portamenteau words called this "stagflation," and it made people miserable. Two presidential administrations were scuttled at least in part by these economic woes; both Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter are considered failed presidents for many reasons, but largely because of an inability to improve the economy. (hint: In reality, no one person can materially change something as big as the world economy, even if they are president, but one person sure can make a handy scapegoat!) So, by and large, the 70s were a pretty terrible time in America economically, but at least the decade gave us Mr. Green. Crash Course World History is now available on DVD! As a history major and politico and someone who actually READS the raw data from the period such as from the IRS and government agencies much of what this guy mouths is left wing ideology. He would never survive a debate with an informed opponent. Claiming history isn't about individuals is nonsense (Julius Caesar, US Grant, etc). That's left wing ideology. These are cute lectures for a very broad based view but once he leaves the bare minimum facts it is mostly ideology and sentiment and not ideas.

Watching this visionarry Mr Green saying "You get elected by promising "more, more , more, alway more, I promise"" thinking about the recent 2016 election, trying not to cry.
-
the treatment of the Iranian revolution is rather simplistic...

Has Alaska been painted on?
-
So, Jimmy Carter was the Barack Obama of the XX century.
-
"Let me tell you a lesson from history ... you get re-elected by telling Americans 'More, more, always more. More for you. More. More. More. I promise." Yup, that sounds a lot like our current president elect.

The ending was so good!! I think a lot of people don't think about the individual decisions and solely blame the government. I blame the government for a lot of things, don't get me wrong. But we need to realize there is some sort of combination between poor government policies and the individual American (specifically a lot of individual Americans) making bad decisions that will add up to a depression. Taxes are a very interesting way to influence behavior and I think the very last sentence of this crash course is very insightful!

The 70s and 80s were the best time in history. Ask any traveler.

You didn't talk about the 3000 farmer strong "Tractorcade" in 1979 to fight for equality to the family farms. I like your vids very interesting!

How did a hostage crisis last for 444 days?

Jimmy Carter was the sole cause for the escalation of the decline of the economy in the 1970s, which is exactly why conservatives were able to regain ground, so I guess I owe him a thankyou.

Only 9 people in manufacturing? Man, I feel lucky.

Except... Carter's approval ratings went UP after the malaise speech. Centrists, who were a lot more numerous back then, DID feel the sense invigoration and resolve that he meant to evoke. The problem was actually that A) conservatives did hate the speech for the reasons you described and B) Carter fired his cabinet. I didn't say he wasn't an inept politician. THAT led to the fall in his polls and the conservatives, being the victors, got to direct the narrative.
