Forget climate Apocalypse. There's hope for our warming planet | Jelmer Mommers | TEDxMaastricht
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In the media’s version of climate change, the end is always nigh. But equating global warming with the apocalypse is wrong. In his talk, journalist Jelmer Mommers brings you the real story. The truth is more human and hopeful than fiction, because millions of people are working to end the era of fossil fuels, along with the violence and inequality that have accompanied this era from the beginning. Correction 7 november 2016: there's an error in the slide titled ‘The top 10% of consumers emit half of the worlds carbon’. It mistakenly divides consumers in eleven groups of ten percent. The bar on the left is redundant. Data credit: Chancel & Piketty, 2015. Jelmer Mommers is an investigative journalist specialized in the field of climate change and energy for the Dutch journalism platform ‘The Correspondent’. He focuses on the intersection between sustainability, culture, politics and economics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

How do you know global warming is coming? How can you prove your charts are not faked? There are no certifications on any of them. I can easily fake them and show a mini ice age on the way. The problem is that there are more climate scientists around than money to support them. Now they are all willing to fake charts and lie their butts off to get a grant. They are quickly becoming the world's most disrespected profession! They have sold you a sack of bullshit!
Consider this: Black soot settling on the ice increasing the absorption of heat from the sun. The black soot is evidenced in almost all videos of the ice sheets and the glaziers. Look at the melting ice! It is gray and even black in some ares. This is exactly what happened on Greenland. It has happen before when volcanic ash settled on the ice.
The problem is massive amounts of volcanic ash from eruptions on Iceland and other parts of the world. Black soot from aircraft, and forest fires plus the burning of dirty coal by China, India, and other poor nations also play a major role. When you darken the ice with black soot and ash, the sun can easily melt it. Lying scientists have lied to you. They are wasting money and valuable time.
We do need to clean the air of black soot and ash, not harmless CO2.
Capt. David Williams, Chairman of the oldest whale conservation group in the world! (google this line). -
I thought this would be either denying climate change or denying its negative consequences. I was pleasantly surprised, and you changed my view! There is hope, but we must act upon it to secure a better future for our grandchildren.

Crap!

The present global warming appears fairly natural and normal. In the presence of so much atmospheric water vapor, I don't see CO2 as a major cause. Burning fossil fuel does create water also. Does this additional water off set the miniscule effects of the CO2 that is produced? Rain water can absorb a lot of CO2.

I can't trust anyone who listens to Micheal Jackson..
-
Another millennial who has adopted a Marxist narrative, bring TedX talks down another notch.
-
He's a journalist, not a scientist. You can tell, can't you?
-
why didnt he mention going vegan? thats the least what we can do as individuals!
-
How about radiation? Fukushima for instance. Jeez, if only your subject were the only problem!

For a realistic view point on climate change I recommend someone who actually studies climate/ecology. David Wasdell, Paul Beckwith, Paul Ehrllich, or Guy McPherson would be good choices. They are all say the situation is very dire if not hopeless. Blind optimism is just as dangerous as outright climate change denialism. Thinking 8 billion of us are going to drive electric cars and live happily ever after is delusional.

Well when you are 30 years old you've had time to learn everything.

TRUMP SCIENCE based on COMMON SENSE - Proves that DONALD Trump is RIGHT, THE SUN WON'T RISE IN THE EAST if Hillary Wins. (The theorist named Copernicus only has a Theory about the earth revolves around the sun). The earth revolving around the SUN and the Rotation of the earth makes it appear the sun is rising is Irrelevant as the CLIMATE CHANGE. Trump COMMON SENSE Science proved yesterday that the TRUMP will be President and is the center of the UNIVERSE. TOMORROW, The sun will appear to rise in the East, but Hillary will be President. Must of been a bunch of Millennial Mexican BLACK Swans. (TRUMP Conspiracy Theory: those female Hispanic Swans were really Bernies Eagles who had been mislead by some AL GORE propaganda)

Some practical suggestions about what individuals could do would have been in place.

He has some misconceptions about colonialism and food security.
Food security is barely caused by climate change, but more by explosive population growth. Only 1 in 5 people would be in those countries just half a century ago, so most are not suffering because of climate change but because of the population explosion in their country. Notice how somehow the red countries are also the ones in which the fertility rate is above world average?
Colonialism was not profitable, it was not it cost more money to maintain the empire than the colonies provided, it was more of a civilising mission. Imperialism is not always profitable. The Iraq war was not profitable for America (except military industry), quite the opposite.
And dont call drone attacks western interventions, their American interventions. -
Thx again for being our brave opening speaker Jelmer!

IMPORTANT question:
What is the beautiful font, he's using, please? Anybody?
Thanks -
How will the rich buy their way out of climate change when there's nothing to buy, there's no water, and the weather is unbearable?

Just imagine what history will say about YOUR actions if things turn out really bad (big chance)!
