The economy of West Germany grew at an impressive rate after the Second World War until the First Oil Crisis in 1973. Once again Germany became one of the globally leading industrial nations. This so-called economic miracle (German: Wirtschaftswunder) was essential for the German self-esteem and a necessary precondition for the first stable democracy on German soil.
