Getting a job at the World Health Organization
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
In this video, Dr Greg Martin talks about his experiences working at the World Health Organization (both the up-sides and the down-sides) and discusses one or two important issues with respect to the application process. Global health (and public health) is truly multidisciplinary and leans on epidemiology, health economics, health policy, statistics, ethics, demography.... the list goes on and on. This YouTube channel is here to provide you with some teaching and information on these topics. I've also posted some videos on how to find work in the global health space and how to raise money or get a grant for your projects. Please feel free to leave comments and questions - I'll respond to all of them (we'll, I'll try to at least). Feel free to make suggestions as to future content for the channel. Hey, so I just finished secondary education and I will be starting university in August. I'm wondering how competitive an internship with the WHO? I heard that out of 10,000 applicants only 500 something get in...is this true? What can I do to stand out?

I actually had a question I met someone online that is a medical doctor in another country for the military he said that he is part of this program and I was if the military pays for him to have a vacation or not because he had asked me to send money

Hello Greg! First, thanks for the videos. I am currently studying Public Health MSc, specializing in Health Economics and Management, and Risk Research. Could you tell me, which positions could I apply for in WHO with this kind of degree? Also, how many years of experience does the WHO expect for those positions?

Thanks for the video. I got an offer for internship at the WHO headquarter last year but I rejected the offer due to financial constraint. Am a Biomedical Scientist and a Masters student in Environmental and Public Health. How likely is it for me to get another offer in terms of internship or job after declining the previous internship offer?

Hi Greg,
I am a pharmacist and i currently study an MSc in Health Economics in York. I am thinking of going for a 3 months internship in WHO in Geneva in summer. I have worked as a volunteer pharmacist for Doctors of the World for 6 months in Greece. Is there any possibility I would be eligible for a job spot in WHO after the internship or the fact that I dont have more than 2 years of work experience will not give me such an opportunity?
Thank you in advance -
Hi there! I know you answered another medical student below, but I too would really love to work for WHO eventually and I also have a question for you. I am still in medical school now, but I'm planning to complete an Epidemiology Intelligence Service (with the CDC) fellowship after residency, and was wondering if that would help me get a placement with WHO, or whether you still recommend the WHO internship in addition.
Their website isn't very helpful in terms of helping candidates understand what might make them competitive, so thank you so much for the help! -
Hello Greg, I know this is an old video but I was wondering, what degree would the WHO look for besides a degree in public health. Would they hire e.g. a biochemist, microbiologist

Hi Greg, I know a while ago you offered mentoring to get a job at the WHO through Helpouts. I am wondering if you still offer that service. Thanks!
