Haitian Revolutions: Crash Course World History #30

Ideas like liberty, freedom, and self-determination were hot stuff in the late 18th century, as evidenced by our recent revolutionary videos. Although freedom was breaking out all over, many of the societies that were touting these ideas relied on slave labor. Few places in the world relied so heavily on slave labor as Saint-Domingue, France's most profitable colony. Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue's population, and in 1789 they couldn't help but hear about the revolution underway in France. All the talk of liberty, equality, and fraternity sounds pretty good to a person in bondage, and so the slaves rebelled. This led to not one but two revolutions, and ended up with France, the rebels, Britain, and Spain all fighting in the territory. Spoiler alert: the slaves won. So how did the slaves of what would become Haiti throw off the yoke of one of the world's great empires? John Green tells how they did it, and what it has meant in Haiti and in the rest of the world. why didn't he mention that there was a massacre against all whites? do they cover that in the AP exam? I think they should
-
fun fact in 1822 haiti actually invaded the eastern side of santo domingo and united the island for twenty years. Simone Bolivar even got some assistance from the president of haiti at that time to help with the revolution going on in Venezuela in exchange that he would free the slaves their also.

"Um, hi, yes. Screw all of you"

Once a man threatened me. he went in his pocket like he was grabbing a gun. I runned away in my mind I was running for my life I was scared to death. He came running after me & fell on the ground. All the fear just turned in anger it is indescribable the anger I felt, I kicked him & truly I wanted to kill him. I think those slaves experienced the same type of thiing.

Sloooow down buddy! You in a rush?

In the opening credits/graphics you say that the great pyramid could be seen from the moon when it had it's original limestone coat!! This clearly untrue and a ridiculous suggestion. That is my only criticism. I love the videos. Keep up the great work.

YO HAMIL-TRASH and all others interested in random Trivia:
Toussaint L'Ouverture's name means the opening in french.
The new was really catholic, so freedom of religion wasn't a thing.
Toussaint was named Governor for life. This idea he got from Hamilton, who helped him draft the constitution of 1801. -
You forgot to mention one random trivia fact:
Napoleon sen't Polish troops to haiti which worked for them in exchange for him promising to restore Poland after conquering Germany.
But seeing as how simmilar the situation of people from haitit are to Poles under german/Russian/Austrian rule.
Most of the sen't Polish soldiers joined the rebbels and helped them defeat the french.
There was no that much of them, but there are now a lot of Haitians which have polish surnames. Though there is no Polish cultural influence. -
Why did you fail to mention the massacre of white settlers and the mixed race people?`
-
Ironically, Haiti is one of the only places in the world where slavery is still a thing!
-
There is an error napoleons coupe was in 1799 not 1779 as it reads

Aaah the comments are filled with "but whattabout..." aka the mating call of the 'maligned' white male. Apparently the slaves weren't supposed to seek retribution from those who had dehumanised and tortured them for centuries. Because they were white, the slaves were supposed to pat them on the back and say "thanks for the experience, adieu".

I love the videos but he speaks so fast that I don't get to process everything and it gives me a headache. is there a way the videos reproduce more slowly?
