Heath vs Wilson - The 10 Year Duel - BBC
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Harold Wilson and Edward Heath are two very different men equally overlooked by history, but they were the political titans of the era in which Britain changed for ever. For ten years they faced each other in the House of Commons, and swapped in and out of Number Ten. They fought four general elections, three of which were amongst the most exciting of the century. They were deliciously different and scorned one another, yet they were cast from the same mould. Both promised a revolution of meritocracy and dynamism in the British economy and society. Both utterly failed, but together they presided over a decade that redefined the nation: Britain ceased to be a world power and entered Europe; the postwar consensus in which they both believed was destroyed; Thatcherism and New Labour were born. The country they left behind was unrecognisable from the one they had inherited - and the one they had promised. This documentary tells the story of their highly personal and political duel in the words of those who watched it blow by blow - their colleagues in the cabinet and government, and the journalists at the ringside. Set against a scintillating backdrop of the music and style of the 1960s and 70s (which was of no interest to either man) it brings the era, and its forgotten figureheads, vividly to life.

Brexit is the final rejection of Ted Heath!

I was a squaddie in the 60/70s when these two were taking turn at 10 Downing St. Viet Nam was at war and US constantly asking UK forces to join them against Communist North. "No way" said Wilson, "its buggerall to do with us" . . . I'm always forever thankful to both Wilson and Heath for ignoring the stupid yanks. I more than likely would have been killed had we joined them . . .!!!

Heath was a post mortem defeat, eleven year after his death ,in June 2016

Just a thought, the Pound was devalued by 14% in 1968 and in 2016, thanks to brexit, was devalued by, erm let me think, 14%. Spot the difference, in 1968 the political right claimed it was political and economic weakness. In 2016 the political right claimed a 14% Pound devaluation is, and I quote, "An incredible opportunity for greater economic benefits" Hypocrisy anyone!

Had to quit after 15 minutes. Couldn't get interested in this horsey race...
-
Gives added perspective watching Heath knowing in the back of his mind he has memories of raping and murdering children from a Jersey orphanage doesn't it.

Nation state within Europe my ass. Welcome to June 2016.

Wilson 2 predecessors were both Old Etonians. Of course that has changed! Blair attended the Scottish Eton, Fetters & the Cabinet now contains Old Etonians. How we have progressed!
-
The only thing Heath got right was sacking Enoch Powell.
-
Both really nasty politicians.
-
I like both the Conservative Party and Labour Party if one screws up i simply vote for the other. I like Labours Social Reforms and Conservative Economic ideas (most of the time) overall I think im just a liberal

I love how people are claiming that Heath was a German Spy and Kiddie Fiddled. Yet these are all rumors and speculations. I am not saying that they are false but just recently he was proved innocent on the kiddie fiddling and to be honest all politicians even today have buried problems, lies and evils. So if it rises again i wont be surprised but there is no reason to kick off about it saying the long gone establishment (profumo affair) has come back more powerful than ever. Soon people are going to want to wear tin hats.

I am happy we have the Fixed Term Parliament act now all these politicians trying to choose the right time.
-
Heath reminds me of G.Brown personality of a door knob.
-
Good thing for Heath the "true" facts about his private life never came out (in his lifetime)!
