History of the Turkish military’s role in politics
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Ever since the independence of the Republic of Turkey, the military faction has played a decisive role in the politics, economics and society of the country. During the 1960s, 1970s and the 1980s, the military ensured the secular nature of the republic through a series of military coups. And eventhough the role of the Turkish military has diminished since the rise of the Justice and Development Party under the leadership of Erdogan, the rise and fall of the Turkish military is part of the geopolitical objectives of a reasserting Turkey. Secularism must be a choice of a country's population, it cannot be forced by the army

so the problem with ottomans started with the janissary system. they shouldn't used it.
what I don't understand is why the ottomans needed to westernize and secularise the military instead of reforming the army in an islamic system? -

Didn't the military have to force out a bunch of religious shit bags over the years out of Turkey to keep it secular ? Also that secularism looks like it's about to die in turkey it's really disappointing actually they effectively have a dictator that lock up journalists and opponents and rigs elections and he's moving the country towards theocracy just another fucking theocracy that's what it looks like to me anyways

And now a military coup for Turkey. 50% pro erdogan, 50% anti erdogan. What's this mean for the Kurds? The Syrian Civil War? Secularism in Turkey? Role with the West? Interested to see Shirvan's perspective on this.

I love this channel. In North America detailed news about the events in Eurasia can be scarce, but you really help fill in the gaps. I also appreciate how you attempt to remain impartial on some of these very contentious issues.

As a Bulgarian I say this with all my heart - FUCK THE OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND FUCK ERDOGAN :) And about the Ottoman empire... I always wondered how did the Ottoman empire came to be so powerful... well, when I wound out that after they conquered the Balkans they immediately started to trade Bulgarian young women as slaves for housework and prostitution to the Jews of Venice, and they immediately started constant wars against Russia - the picture became clear as a sunny day. Sadly - slavery days are coming once again and the fucking EU will gives Turks visas to travel free in the EU ? We have been here since 681 and once again we are about to be slaughtered from the savages that come from the east - does not matter if it is christians or muslims - Byzantine Empire or Ottoman Empire - fuck em all - as always - the Balkans nations and especially Bulgaria will take the hardest hit for Europe''s sake and sadly - our corrupt government has destroyed this country completely while the people are sleeping, dreaming of democracy and freedom which are illusions. Apparently we are not learning from our history so we are are doomed to repeat it. May God be with us as always and let us survive the storm that is coming.
