Roughly 40 percent of the world’s unemployed are young people between the ages of 15 and 24—shut out of traditional enterprise, many of them seek the “underground economies” of gangs and extremist movements. The 2016 HOPE Global Forums I Annual Meeting featured a panel session that explored ways to revive economies by creating opportunities for youth. Moderated by former U.S. ambassador to Nigeria, ECOWAS, and Republic of Congo, Dr. Robin Renee Sanders, CEO of FEEEDS Advocacy Initiative and owner of FE3DS, LLC, the panel—Head of Center, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Carol Guthrie; Managing Director, The Bank Association South Africa, Cas Coovadia; VP of Marketing & Communications, SEDCO Holdings, Amr Banaja; and Program Manager, McKinsey Social Initiative, Sean Brazier—examined measures to increase job creation for youth and other disadvantaged groups. This new community is a platform to extend the engagement and dialogue around this critical issue.
