How Big is a Trillion Dollars?

Explanation of large sums of money and the way the United States Government is able to spend astronomical sums of money with apparent ease. Note that in the United States we use the "short scale" system for large numbers where one thousand is 1,000, one million is 1,000,000, one billion is 1,000,000,000 and one trillion is 1,000,000,000,000. Canada and some others use the "long scale". I made this video to illustrate problems with the US economy and in doing so referred to the number system used in the US. If it offends you that our number system is not the same as that used in your country please accept my humble apologies.

graphics and "where did you get all that money" aside, a trillion (or 14 trillion) dollars IS an unimaginable amount. But so is seven billion people, and so is four thousand miles (the radius of the Earth), and many other things. What matters more in economics is proportions and rates of change. How much interest are we paying on this debt? What's our deficit? How large is this debt compared to our GDP? (the value that the US produces in one year) How do our numbers compare to other countries? What are the odds that we go Greece? (Hint: its a long way off) Both Republicans and Democrats have proposed solutions to this "problem", and those solutions might work, with varying outcomes in the long run, but there are other problems that matter more right now (like that the temperature might soon rise above freezing in some permafrost-ed areas and then lots of methane will be released into the atmosphere), and saying that the US government might soon fail and causing people to stop investing will only cause a recession or depression, not solving any problems.
