CORRECTION: At 0:16, Dr. Davies says "In 1990, the United Nations set very ambitious Millennium Development Goals." The Millennium Development Goals were set in the year 2000; several of these goals use 1990 as a starting point. Learn More: https://www.learnliberty.org/ Have you heard the news? The number of people living in abject poverty—defined as living on less than $1.25 per day—has been halved since 1990. How did that happen? Prof. Stephen Davies explains that extreme poverty has been on the decline in part because two of the world's most populous countries, China and India, have embarked on a path of economic liberalization and development over the past two to three decades. As more countries have embraced free trade and market-friendly policies, we have seen encouraging news of poverty reductions and greater access to clean drinking water. If such policies continue, Prof. Davies says, it's not out of the question for extreme poverty to be eradicated in the foreseeable future. These gains are likely to be lost, however, if we make poor economic decisions that take us back toward protectionism and economic controls. With good economic policies and free markets, we can help many of the poorest people in the world. The worlds poorest people are having the most children. They have not figured out the connection between their poverty and family size. Endless population growth is not sustainable. If you can not provide for yourself you can not provide for a child.
-
China made great progress in moving its people out of poverty.......one reason was slowing population growth.....
If you can not provide for yourself you can not provide for a child.
Climate Change, declining fish stocks, droughts, floods, pollution, poverty, water and food shortages all stem from the worlds worst environmental problem……. OVER POPULATION.
Yet the world adds 80 million more mouths to feed, clothe, house and provide energy and water for every year… this is unsustainable…

can anyone tell me why GDP is a bad measure of economic growth indicator?
-
unfortunately 1 dollar was .20 ruppes.. then 4 rupees.. slowly now 54 rupees.. does it look like 1.25 dollar is worth now? correct me if am wrong
-
Is he actually trying to sell us the idea that capitalism ends poverty? Come on mate, go and tell your bullshit to some kindergartens who might actually believe you....
-
#1 way to reduce poverty is infrastructure. 1. Water 2. Sewage 3. Shelter 4. Health-care. These are simple to do but NEVER will be accomplished by poverty pimps. My opinion.
-
This is not true the reason so many more people are better of is because of technology not markets hence why western world and soviet states were both much better off than the capitalist 3rd world
-
The only liberty in capitalism is reserved for the 1% privileged among us.

China's government is authoritarian capitalism. They control the largest businesses in every strategic sector of the economy e.g energy, telecommunications, transportation. I get the message is pro free market boo government regulation. Don't use the decrease in China's extreme poverty to try and make that case. There is very little "free" in China's market. That's why people can't even watch videos like this in China. The great firewall.
-
again this absolute poverty bullshit... people who earn $2,5 are not poor? TRY LIVING FOR 2 $ PER DAY BITCH
-
Capitalism Ho!
-
Done away with government controls on entrepreneurs, commerce, and business? Are you kidding me? The USA has a downright criminal amount of arbitrary government controls and rules.
-
Fuck this libertarian propaganda. Stop trying to kill off the poor for your personal benefit please.
-
has that $1.25 goal been adjusted for inflation?
-
$1.25 and $2 are nothing more than artificial target numbers. Sure, its great when the wage went up by $0.75, but when cost went up by a factor of 2 or more it kind of negates the whole point... well except for making the UN target numbers look better than they actually are. FYI, free trade, and all that bull is just that... no good... well, except for the 0.01%'ers
-
Did this bald twat just suggest that China's government has lessened control over its economy?
-
Here's the fix! Help the whole world by capping what heirs can inherit! Anonymous outsider solves the big picture
-
The statistics didnt seem to take account for inflation... Im assuming $1.25 was a lot more in 1960 than it is now. The video also only focuses on extreme poverty, which would become more extreme with inflation, rather than overall poverty rates... Economic freedom is good but so is the economic concept of the social interest theory rather than the adoption of public choice theory (which allows rational ignorance to control the production of public goods) . We live in a world with very distinct, well-defined elitism.

Private property is bullshit. Why should some billionaire inherit many acres of London only to profit big time from the work of his ancestor? A free market? great! They can stop paying tax altogether. -_-

Poverty will always exist. These advances have been made on the backs of the United States citizens.
