Imagine.... Who's Afraid Of Machiavelli (3 Dec 2013)

My New Favourite Documentary. With performances from Peter Capaldi, imagine... marks the 500th anniversary of Machiavelli's notorious book The Prince. Famous for lines like 'It is better to be feared than loved', The Prince has been a manual for tyrants from Napoleon to Stalin. But how relevant is The Prince today, and who are the 21st century Machiavellians? Alan Yentob talks to contributors including Colonel Tim Collins, who kept a copy of The Prince with him in Iraq; plus Hilary Devey, Alastair Campbell and Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin.

I have read the book a number of times and found it very amusing. My favourite saying of his is, " a wise prince always fosters opposition to himself, so when he overcomes that opposition he will appear to be greater among his peers". Could this be the very modus operandi of modern politics? The police? Paranoid sociopaths?
Another is:- "It is often taught that we must follow in the footsteps of great men, but if a prince's prowess does not measure up to great men, then at least it has an air of greatness about it."
Then there is a chapter titled Those Who Get into Power by Means of Criminality. That is about the Carthaginian Agathocles and Machiavelli's contemporary Oliverotti. -

if i read about machiavellis diplomatic mission, i very often find that he was not sucessfull. during wartime, he was given quatermasters status but there are only administrative duties. i rather see him as a theoretical force, not very sucessfull, it that impression wrong?

it is the greatest documentary made about the topic of Machiavelli... one could well wonder why the book that he wrote became Legendary centuries following his publication... i believe this is because it discuss other philosophies of life outside the context of politics n Government life... still its the best book ive ever read... i must have like 17 editions of this book stored in my room... excellent guide-to-life "Pamphlet" like he called his work ;)

Its All about Playing the GAME .

Machiavelli learnt a lot from Agothocles.
-
Remarkable lack of 'The Discourses' which some say is Machiavelli's true political disposition.
-
I first heard of this dude from Tupac, it took til today to actually look it up
-
I wonder if Niccolo Machiavelli himself was "machiavelli-an"??
Considering that his career ultimately failed and that
he died fairly poor... I think it is safe to assume not.
However...
it should be noted that he was NOT a "prince" or otherwise
in a position to be a true power-broker and a wielder thereof...
but was a diplomat and worked (and excelled) more in the periphery and found himself
on the losing side when the Medici were deposed and then again regained power.
In short...
that put him not in a position of power...
but in a position as an observer. -
Prepare for a problem when you don't have one, because problems in life are inevitable - This is just as Machiavellian as any of the others!
