India and China in the World Economy, and Why That Matters William Miller, Herbert Hoover Professor of Public and Private Management Emeritus, Stanford Graduate School of Business; President Emeritus, SRI International Rafiq Dossani, Senior Research Scholar, Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center, Stanford University; Executive Director, South Asia Initiative Sean Randolph, President and CEO, Bay Area Council Economic Institute - Moderator India and China are the world's two most populous countries, with dynamic, fast-growing economies that are reshaping the economic balance of power. It is widely accepted that both countries are becoming forces to contend with -- which will present the United States with challenges and opportunities. But though they are often spoken of together, their political and economic systems are very different. The similarities and differences between India and China, the distinct economic paths they have chosen, and the success of their respective models will heavily influence the shape of the future global economy -- and the United States. Two noted experts on China and India will compare and contrast modern India and China, and assess their present and future roles.

India's economy is collapsing as from 2012. The hope of India to revive seems remote.
-
Dr. Dossani knows the old india. He clearly has less clue of what is brewing lately.

Apple is moving back its production lines from China to America, thanks to the maturation of robotic technology which could now handle light industry's intricate work at a cheaper cost than human labor in the 3rd world. A large illiterate population will become a great burden to 3rd world countries in the future. While many Indians still absurdly thought that that large illiterate population is their strength.

50% indians don't know where there next meal is coming from??

PRC's lucky # is 9. Any significant date or data related to PRC is 9. 30 years is small change, 60 years is big change, that's how we count using ancient Chinese calender. And its Five Element's qi is wood (east), Mao Zedong literally Mao water east. In 1919, the Chinese people suffered. In 1949, the Chinese people stood up. In 1979, the Chinese people becoming rich. In 2009, the Chinese people took off. In 2039, the Chinese people is peaceful and content. In 2069, world harmony.

Any shoe shiner on the streets of Bombay spouts 3 languages at the drop of his hat. And those are rich sophisticated languages with 48 to 52 letters in their alphabet and very sophisticated grammar - not easy make shift business language like English. Dr. Dossani is talking from the Wall Street point of view and Wall Street is certainly not the place where educated people work. They may be skilled in number crunching but certainly not educated or civilized.
-
Rafiq Dossani may be an Indian and highly educated one by western standard (definition of education is different in India) but his knowledge of Indian history is that of a convent educated school boy at best, who is still taught India was civilized by the British. Democracy in India existed when mankind outside the border of India did not know how to wear clothes. If you don't believe me, read Mark Twain, William James Durant or ask Francis Fukuyama, to name just a few.

Corruption should be handled better because India has democracy? What kind of absurd logic is this? How could a system distorted by corruption be possibly handled "better" by the corrupted system itself simply because of democracy?? It takes much more than things rather than simply democracy to handle it.

Actually China has already brought the most number of people out of poverty in the history of humanity. As of now, their poverty rate is between 6%-20% of Chinese citizens, unlike India which has a poverty rate of 41%-60%. This is embarrassing because even Pakistan and African countries like Ethiopia have a poverty rate of 21%-40%. My statistics are based on UN estimates on the 'Percentage of population living on less than $1.25 per day'. Just Google image it if you can't believe.

Why are you comparing India to countries with political unrest? Even so, Egypt has a higher standard of living than peaceful India, just compare their HDI, even Syria does. And don't give the excuse that India is a large country. So what if its large? China can feed most of its people, US most certainly can. Why can't India? Why are there still 300 million people below the poverty line?
-
I didn't say democracy has failed as a system but it certainly has failed in India. What is the use of having basic human rights when almost half of the country can't get basic human needs? And I find it silly that Indians are trying to advice the rest of the world on how to live when life is second hardest in India only next to sub-Saharan Africa. Before talking about democracy or autocracy, make sure your people have adequate food and shelter.
-
You seriously think that the 250 million people who eat one meal a day or none and the 66% of the Indian population which doesn't get proper sanitary are happy? Are you on a high? Indian democracy failed more than any other democracy and because of that, most parts of India are still comparable to sub-Saharan Africa. Even the Arab world with all the wars is healthier and wealthier. What's the use of a democracy when people don't even get basic needs?
-
If Indian people could just give up their habits of bragging about their "greatness" that never exists and learnt their weakness, they will do better than now.
-
China is Far ahead of India, I am and Indian and I agree to that. The Manufacturing capabilities has helped Chinese a lot in terms of generating employment, Betterment of Educational Framework and Trade. It will take a lot for India to reach the benchmark which Chinese has set.

India is a terrible example of Democracy.
