Insight: Ideas for Change - Michael Porter - Creating Shared Value
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
http://www.weforum.org/ Michael Porter sees huge opportunities for corporations to use capitalism as a driver to tackle social problems via the creation of shared value. Adopting environmentally sustainable policies has been shown to be good for busi- nesses, e.g. through the lower production costs associated with reduced raw material and energy usage. Porter believes the same efficiencies and benefits can be achieved by corpo- rations looking at their products, supply chain and stakeholder eco-systems through the prism of social issues, and thereby harnessing the effectiveness of capitalism to create a win-win situation.

Interesting ideas and it's good to have such thought leaders out there.
I'm not much more convinced personally by CSV than by CSR. Not everything in life (feeding the poor, protecting the weak) can be boiled down to profit. And neither should it be.
You talk about redistribution: but that is already happening as powerful corporations and individuals suck capital from the rest of the system, particularly nation states (many of whom are technically insolvent).
Whilst Capitalism isn't of itself evil; it isn't a model which can hope to fix all society's ills either. We still need to give, as individuals and corporates. -
economics moving back into the realm of a social science. About time.

Social Responsibility ? .CSR is just an eyewash for the gross social IRRESPONSIBILITY of the corporates. Whether it is volkswagOn , barCLAYs , Nestle , Pfizer , ExxXonMobil , Chevron, .............. ........... ............. .

Akon going to africa to provide solar lighting for millions of people is the quintessential shared value principle in action.

A person's health should not be dependent on a business model or capitalism in general. Used to be a fan of Mr. Porter, but less so now.

Capitalism will save the world? Very neoliberal and self-serving. I have trouble with one fundamental premise: Porter leads us to think only businesses create value "Capitalism is where all wealth is created, there is no wealth created by government, there is no wealth created by NGOs. Where business makes a profit, magic happens." (4:30) But wealth is not value, it is only money. When a government builds a public transport system, it does not create profit, but it does create value for society.
