영국 문화 및 경제 소개 Now, before we head any further, why don't we first get a better understanding of the United Kingdom, a nation more well-known to the average Koreans for the Queen, the Premier League, and afternoon tea? We turn to Kim Hyesung to enlighten us. The terms are sometimes used interchangably -- England, Great Britain, the UK -- but to be precise, the United Kingdom comprises four countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. And they're on two islands -- one of which is Great Britain. The UK made headlines around the world this summer when it voted to leave the European Union. With a population of over 60 million, and a territory similar in size to the Korean peninsula, Britain is one of the smaller countries in western Europe. But with its economic and cultural prowess, "Brexit" will be strongly felt by the rest of the Union. Britain has a vibrant culture... ranging from the literature of Shakespeare and Dickens to pop music like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones... and TV dramas like Sherlock. In modern times, in addition to its cultural prominence, the UK has thrived on financial services. London, known as the heart of global finance, is home to more than 250 overseas banks and the city contributes about twenty percent of the UK's 2.8 trillion dollar GDP. The UK is also the second largest exporter of services in the world after the U.S.... trading about half of its goods and services with European nations. And with Korea, its diplomatic partner of 133 years, two-way trade under the Korea-EU FTA has totaled more than 13 billion dollars. And as the 5th largest economy in the world, the UK has played a critical role on the global stage as a permanent member of the UN security council, a founding member of NATO, and an active member of the EU -- that is, until June 2016. While Brexit has created uncertainties and resulted in a new prime minister, Theresa May, who will oversee the transition, an exit also represents a new beginning. Britain's new freedom from the EU's bureacracy and rules could mean more opportunities to deepen its cultural, diplomatic and economic relationship with Korea. Kim Hyesung, Arirang News.
