In which John Green teaches you about Iran's Revolutions. Yes, revolutions plural. What was the1979 Iranian Revolution about? It turns out, Iran has a pretty long history of unrest in order to put power in the hands of the people, and the most recent revolution in 1979 was, at least at first, not necessarily about creating an Islamic state. It certainly turned out to be about that, but it was initially just about people who wanted to get rid of an oppressive regime. Listen up as John teaches you about Iran's long history of revolution. The 1979 Iranian Revolution--seems very much like the English serfs moving to London in the Middle Ages, with the wool industry driving the farmers off the land...
-
Great, but the Shah exiled in Egypt, not in the U.S.

2:26 Why does it look like all those people are smiling while killing each other? That one guy in the lower right of the first panel almost looks thankful for being stabbed five or six times.

All the Shah's Men is probably the best book I've ever read on the Iranian coup. As much as I love Crash Course, it definitely messed up that part. The Iranian revolution was a direct response to Western involvement in their government from the coup. Iranians looked up to America as a defender of democracy and were betrayed by them (nobody trusts the English). The English proposed the idea of a coup to the U.S. 3 times. (Shout out to Truman for not supporting the English, Eisenhower did though)
Anyway, my point is that Mossadegh was loved and supported. There is so so so much to this. If you are interested, I encourage you to read All the Shah's Men by Stephen Kinser

Wow. This is so wrong. Well first of all, after the Safavids Iran was rules by the Zand dynasty which subsequently were overthrown by the Qajars. Second, Mosadegh did not flee Iran, he was put on trial and came under house arrest until his death and HE WAS NOT A COMMUNIST, he was with the National Party not the Tudeh(People's Party).
