2. And yet, suicide is on the rise and everyone's miserable all the time. Maybe we should focus more on quality of life and less on ensuring lots of people are living.

5. It's progress alright, even if slow.
   
   But this is a job that isn't going to end anytime soon. Not by a long shot.
   
   Maybe by 2100, it will be an era where a person exists for whom topics like hunger, conflict, poverty and environmental decline will be something only heard of in history books. Before that - not a very optimistic picture.
6. Why don't we all just live in a hut with no cars, I phones, electricity, hot water or TV and knock down all buildings and live of of the natural resources that should fix the environment

The Un stole the idea of the MDGS from Stalin's Five Year plans (except for a fifteen year period) and the five year plans worked very well for Soviet development in 1928 when the first one was introduced Soviet Union had an illiteracy rate of 50 percent today every former soviet republic has near universal literacy the great Moscow and st Petersburg metros were built and so on China India and Brazil have developed five year plans of their own and it works well for them

10. In other words, we've definitely achieved 3 and a half of the 8 goals (if u count poverty but not hunger), definitely failed to reach 2 of them and 2 are unquantifiable (environment and global partnership), though probably on the "fail" side.

11. It's not about necessity. I would think anyone who would find poverty necessary has a screw loose some were. Poverty is going to be with us for more reasons then I care to write about. We will not over come poverty because people are sinful and have free will. So... if a person is hungry, feed them . If they need clothes, give them clothes. If they need a blanket give them a blanket. If they need medical attention , or shelter, or anything else, do what you can. But its NOT going to go away. ( unfortunately ). And if that was not clear enough...

13. This is some great news, but it doesn't answer, or even touch upon the presented question. Is Poverty Necessary? I was looking for something... I don't know... A little more philosophical.

18. Lot going on here. I'll try to come back to it, if I manage to remember. Your assessment sounds very Sachs-esk. Which is good / fine, investment does make a huge difference. Tho, as it goes with providing necessary goods and services via the non-profit sector (and others as well) it begins to be more complex. The MDGs would seem to have painted a picture that we can throw money at the "global south" and see great gains, I am of the opinion that the gains we saw, were mostly "low-hanging fruit."
