National security is being used as a "guise for censoring the Internet," Jillian C. York of the Electronic Frontier Foundation asserts. A speaker at the 2011 Personal Democracy Forum Conference in New York City, York suggests that Amazon's ban of WikiLeaks opened the door for Internet censorship to happen to anyone. This type of censorship persists, York says, as Egyptian activists have their social networking accounts deactivated and Facebook removes political pages because unpopular speech is deemed "hate speech."
