Dr. Martin Weale giving a talk on the Balance of Payments at the Warwick Economics Summit. Dr. Martin Weale is one of Britain's most influential monetary policy makers. Since joining the Bank of England's nine-strong Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) in 2010 he has been a key figure in decisions on interest rates in the UK and quantitative easing. As a speaker at this year's Summit, he will be the fourth member of the MPC in as many years to attend. He follows Kate Barker, Dr. Adam Posen and Warwick's own Dr. Andrew Sentance. Martin has also served as director of the leading British think tank the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) for 15 years, where he has proven himself a prolific writer or papers, reports and advisory documents for a range of governments, institutions and bodies. He was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1999 for his services to economics. As the British economy stands on the brink of another period of recession, the tricky task of keeping inflation low and simultaneously encouraging growth in tough times will make 2013 a busy year for British policy makers, for the MPC and, indeed, for Martin Weale.
