Mass Incarceration in the US

Thanks to Visually (http://Visual.ly) for facilitating the creation of this video, to http://youtube.com/kurzgesagt for the animation, and to The Prison Policy Initiative for research help and fact checking. (http://www.prisonpolicy.org). It wasn't easy to pick this topic, but I believe that America's 40-year policy of mass incarceration is deeply unethical, not very effective, and promotes the security of the few at the expense of the many. It's hard for me, as a person who was born into privilege, to imagine the challenges convicted criminals face, often for crimes that are utterly non-violent. If you're feeling like you want to do something about this, I'm mostly just making this video as an informational resource and to encourage people to think of felons not as bad, scary people but just as people. The people at The Prison Policy Initiative were very helpful in the creation of this video and if you want to learn more about their work and how to get involved go to http://www.prisonpolicy.org

you know what's funny send someone to jail and when they leave make sure they are poor so they can commit crimes again
-
I hate it when people say pack people commit most of the crime it's not your skin color the determines what you do but where you're raised and it turns out the blacks mostly live in the "hood"

I am an ex con. Non violent but since i did 11 months in prison i cannot own a firearm and protect myself which violates the 2nd amendments right to bear arms. America is a violent place. I rather be caught with a gun than without it. If you know what i mean

....Mind blown. o_o

This is why America doesnt sign many of the international law stuff. For instance George W. Bush is acctually considered a war criminal but since we aren't in the international court system we don't have to give him over to the International court

I didn't know any of this

We have a higher prison population than North Korea...

I am glad some people are waking up to this mess and corruption...BUT NOW WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO ABOUT IT!! it's another form of SLAVERY! ACTUALLY ALLOWED IN THE CONSTITUTION! YES!!

St. Tammany Parish Louisiana leads Louisiana. The police, the justice system (22nd) , DOC, DCS are all in on the gig. Its a business. every person they can jail or every child they can kidnap = federal dollars. Loserana needs independent over-site of its police, judicial system,DOC and DCS.

1:10 You know it's bad when we're worse than North Korea...

It won't change because people are making billions off of this injustice. They are not going to give up their cash cow for holistic solutions that actually reduce crime and reduce recidivism and require prisons to close or convert to B&Bs because fewer criminals are left. As much as the USA likes to boast it is a "Christian" nation, it is far from being a place that encourages redemption and restorative justice. It is more of a vengeance and punishment kind of place.

unfortunately, since most prisons are owned by for-profit corperations, this system of mass incarceration and systematic dehumanization will NEVER go away unless we illegalize all forms of life necessities being owned by for-profits. this will never happen though.

I was wondering if there is any solution to this problem. I have a few ideas but if there can really be a change.

Maybe one of the reasons incarceration in US is higher than other countries is that law is enforced more effectively. In my home country(Brazil) people have the impression that you can get away with crimes easily, or that punishment will take too long due to many levels of appeals. Not to mention the possibility of corrupt judges.
