Nate Hagens - Limits to Growth: Where We Are and What to Do About It
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
Recorded October 14th in Vancouver, BC Production Notes: Unfortunately, our lighting washed out Nate's face for the first 1/3 of this video, especially on the close angle Is the global economy hitting the limits to growth? In this talk, Nate Hagens will synthesize the current landscape of global energy, environment and financial risks while offering suggestions on what to do as a hominid living on a full planet. He will raise the question of whether it is possible to degrow our economies with conscious effort before our options are constrained by external forces. After a quick summary of the situation, he will lead a conversation with the audience on appropriate responses to these challenges. Are large climate rallies accomplishing anything? If they aren't, what is a better plan of action? Nate Hagens: Nate Hagens is a well-known speaker on the big picture issues facing human society. Until recently he was lead editor of The Oil Drum, one of the most popular and highly-respected websites for analysis and discussion of global energy supplies and the future implications of energy decline. Nate is currently on the Boards of Post Carbon Institute, Bottleneck Foundation, IIER and Institute for the Study of Energy and the Future. Nate's presentations address the opportunities and constraints we face after the coming end of economic growth. On the supply side, Nate focuses on the interrelationship between debt-based financial markets and natural resources, particularly energy. On the demand side, Nate addresses the evolutionarily-derived underpinnings to status, addiction, and our aversion to acting about the future and offers suggestions on how individuals and society might better adapt to what's ahead. Ultimately, Nate’s talks cover the issues relevant to propelling our species (and others) into deep time. Nate has appeared on PBS, BBC, ABC and NPR, and has lectured around the world. He holds a Masters Degree in Finance from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Natural Resources from the University of Vermont. Previously Nate was President of Sanctuary Asset Management and a Vice President at the investment firms Salomon Brothers and Lehman Brothers. P.S. I am a hypocrite because I am forced to live in a society that is consumer based and it's impossible to obtain my basic needs with out submitting to this life style. Especially if I want to do my best to make a difference I need to obtain money so I can pursue my studies (currently International Relations, I am aiming to focus on International law and transnational ecological crimes)
-
Don't waist your time campaigning, environmentalists need to start a coup d'etat on industrial consumerism.

The best quote I can take with me from this video "No one responds to facts"... your right they only care about kim kardashians ass and justin biebers shinanigans Bill Cosbies perversion... Kim is one of many with a fake ass, justin bieber is one of many attention hores, bill cosby is one of many predators (I don't care if he is or not) problem is society attention is towards celebraties that are fucking up the social structure... It makes no sense that kim kardashian gets more attention then Angelina Jolies social efforts in developing countries that deal with extreem corruption, poverty, lack of resources. While the west consumes more then they need and dispose the surplus they can't manage to consume or deem unsatisfactory quality when it is still perfectly consumable. I believe the public wishes to numb themselves from the truth and can't face the music so they turn to unintelegent diversions to distract themselves from the real problems. They look at the numbers in their account rather then the planet they live on. Society has never been so fucked up. Consider that many hunter and gatherers used to kill offsprings that they could not provide for.

You are my Hero Nate. Serious. I feel better knowing you have a gift and the strength to use it.

I really enjoyed watching this presentation. It gave me back a false sense of HOPE, Somehow ?? Nate has replaced my use of the word Hate.
Can't see any improvement until the religious freaks also open their book and realise there isn't anything about God in it. You SHOULD !!!... be careful.
We need a new civilization based on sustainability and people. Not a wasteful money economy. People don't need much to be happy and survive.
We need centralized Industrialization based on necessities rather than wants and on a global scale. Void of competition and marketing.
We need to stop people from accumulating wealth, especially those who use it against humanity.
We need a global military system which promises to rid those who kill others and rape resources around the planet. Including USA.
We need to take the wealth off the stupid and make sure they never get a chance at it again.
We need to build communities. remember that word?? And take people out of the cities as we pull them down. Large Green houses with raised garden beds, simple housing and vast amounts of land and no more 9 to 5 bullshit fake growth jobs. Growth..
"He who has the gold, makes the,,,,,, " Take away the gold, stop global trading, evolve globalism to where it needs to be.
We need people to stop breeding for a lengthy amount of time.
We need to make the large cities clean their air and water.
We need to clean up the plastic out of the oceans.
We need people to stop being arseholes. There is a huge race issue as well, and people pretending to like each other when they inwardly hate due to obvious reasons like behavior and reading each others mannerisms incorrectly.
Good luck.
3 meals! Stop feeding people for a day and it's all over.
How can we do it when it was set up against us.?
Yes, I believe in God, but not the institutions which have been usurped and bastardised them since the time they were created.
Consumerism.. -
Humanity will be dead soon and is that a bad thing? He's right about what he says about what will happen either one day after I die and 1000 years after: doesn't concern me; I never asked to be here and I did not have children very consciously so fuck nature! I did not add to human suffering. (Nature is one big factory of suffering in the best of times, just ask one animal which is being eaten by another.) So let it all starve, let it all die!

If a Global Collapse actually happens, then we need better advice than meditation and gardening. I'm looking for real world presentations like: The Apocalypse Driven Life, The Upside of Cannibalism, or One Eyed Larry's Guide to strangling your neighbor and taking his stuff.

At about 49:20 he states "if we were to do a wealth transfer" how the people in the bottom Quintiles would spend it on consuming more resources and how that would drive the prices higher and they would be back where they started. Think a step or two further and realize that the wealth doesn't exist, and is only an illusion to maintain control. The reason all the money is being funneled to the top is because the monetary system must grow, but the energy to exploit resources creating value is limited, so the money has to be sequestered where it isn't spent, or invested in BS that doesn't have value. or spent in the hyper inflationary markets of fashion, art, etc. where the wealthy waste money. Austerity measures are designed to create demand destruction in order to hide the reality that the futures resources and energy, that enormous amounts of credit were issued against, doesn't exist. The housing/credit bubble was as intentional and as obvious as giving crackheads multiple $1000 credit cards one after. Bankers created fantastic amounts of money out of thin air simply by issuing credit for what they knew had no value other than to enslave the population with debt and austerity in order to continue their fraud. America has military bases all over the planet to control the planets exponentially depleting energy resources because their isn't enough to go around, or the bases wouldn't exist, and the US government wouldn't be risking war with China and Russia. Every time Obama says growth and jobs, he's playing americans for the fools they are, and the consequences are that the welfare of the population has been sacrificed to those who have brought us all to ruin, and will continue to do so.

Hey Nate ...your a very good man ....hope all goes well for you.
-
you have to offer a deep bow to Hagens who adjusted his lifestyle after earning $500,000 for many years (living the miserable life among the greedy) back down to near survival wages of $40,000 per year and finding a more joyous life.

1 become a college professor so you can make enuf $$$ to live in a rural area with your girlfriend, own horses, and take up gem hunting as a hobby...
2 instead of sending a email, take out a pen (made in a factory in china) and get some paper (made from a dead tree from canada) and send a letter (delivered by a guy in a fossil fuel guzzling truck to an airplane, backto a warehouse with hundreds of workers driving hundreds of cars to get back and forth) THEN, pat your smug little self of the back, and DIE HAPPY...
hahahahaahahah -
Leftist rubbish. Sponsored by the top elitist 1%ers.
