Old geographies, new orders -- China, India and the future of Asia: Rush Doshi at TEDxFulbright
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Why are China and India so populous? How did they account for half of global GDP for centuries? Why did they fall from wealth and power? What does their reemergence mean for the future? What connects past and present is the enduring relevance of geography. Fulbright from the US to China, 2011. Defense Analyst, Long Term Strategy Group. Rush uses the distant past to think about the future. He's so convinced that China and India will play pivotal roles in tomorrow's world that he learned Mandarin and Hindi. He's traveled the eastern Himalayas, the China-Burma border, and the mountain passes between China and Pakistan. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Sonia Gandhi used the English media to sideline Mr. Rao who is the mastermind of economic liberalization and shifted limelight to Dr. Singh.

No wonder China has annexed Tibet...
-
Europeans used industrialization to build gunpowder weapons and used it against the Asian countries to loot every drop of their resources...including human resource(=slavery)...that's what lead to the fall of Asia and rise of the bloodthirsty.

May China fail so that Taiwan can get the chance to entirely flee from modern Chinese Empire.

Amazing how the mountains and glaciers that erode slowly and continue to provide us with the necessary nutrition along with other weather patters across the world. The warm air from the tropics and the seas etc. With the Himalayan plateau growing, Indian sub continent should technically continue to thrive really well along with China for several millions of years to come. The shift in terms of power and position in the past couple of centuries is a tiny speck in the timeline. Geography will continue to dictate the course back to the same normalcy over the time.

US, India, China, Russia, UK, France, Germany all cool. I fear North Korea, a single idiot can sink the ship alone.

i would be delighted if the blue bar is splitted to represented China and India

ohh please. Nehru's economic policies crippled India for 40 years. The Deng Xiaoping equivalent for India was Dr. Manmohan Singh that led the liberalization of the Indian economy in 1991 as the finance minister of India.

As to the competition between China and India, Chinese have have different mindset than Indians. Most Chinese don't care about whether India is going to be richer than China or not. They only care about whether the social system in China works or not. Because in Chinese' mind, if you do things right, then nature will take its course and find the right place for you. You can seldom find media in China comparing China with India and keeping scores.
The main reason, I think, is that Chinese don't see India as equal rivals. First of all, China has gone through a lot of troubles to reach its position of today. China don't have democracy and free market or speech that is acknowledged by the (dominant) western world. And most of the developed countries banned exporting technology to China, even the Soviet Union did so. As a matter of fact, Chinese think it is wield that India haven't become richer already. And also, all these turn out to be the national shame after India lost the Sino-Indian War.
The the second reason, which is more important, is that, many Chinese don't think India has full sovereignty. There is no evidence that Chinese can see such that India can make decision on its own or the region without risking going through major conflict with the West. Actually, the western admiration in Indian society has lessen the significance of Indian tradition culture. Even the border dispute between the countries are under severe historical influence of the British colonization in India. -
very helpful

A simplistic presentation made up of erroneous facts and assumptions.
1) Tibetan water flows to Mekong river too, but Lao & Cambodia never had population comparable to India & China. Geography is not the sole reason.
2) Maddison's work on ancient economy is based on GDP PPP, incorrect metric to measure size of economy (Nominal GDP)
3) Ancient India GDP PPP refers to the entire subcontinent, South Asia + Afghan. (The country India was newly formed by the British in 1940's)
4) Population size doesn't correspond to GDP size. China's GDP is 5 times > India, but it remains to be seen if communist govt can outlast a democratic India -
Price for economic growth is too high for us. But people in CHina and India really do not have choice. We have to catch up with the world economy, that is the only reason we were not entirely colonized by any country. IF Westerners know how to respect the world(colonizing, assimilating) we may not need to pay the price of the brutal economy.

China and India do not belong on the same page.
Why are Indians so obsessed with China ? -
One-child policy in China is already an old story. China gave it up last year.
