The University of Edinburgh Enlightenment Lecture Series with the support of ScottishPower presents Globalisation & the 21st Century Enlightenment by Joseph Stiglitz. The Principal of The University of Edinburgh, Timothy OShea said: The University is delighted to welcome Joseph Stiglitz to speak as part of our Enlightenment Lecture Series. He is one of the giants of economics, his contributions across every part of the discipline are recognised the world over. He has already played a major role in shaping events in the worlds recent economic history, and now he is set to shape our future with his ground breaking theories on how globalisation needs to work for disenfranchised peoples worldwide. His lecture examining themes of global economics for the new millennium promises to be a fascinating insight into new economic theory.

Why does he talk so weirdly and incessantly look down at his prepared speech? Who would translate his work into 35 languages?

On the why of the 'one size fits all' policies of 'structural adjustment' - the World Bank/IMF/Federal Reserve have one client. The arrogance that radiates out from the heads of the IMF/WB/etc. is the arrogance of the trillionairs. Google: wolfensohn rothschild theaustralian

(about 00:50) Free Market Ideology Caused The Famines In Somalia 'The West' has been trying to destroy and balkanize Somalia, so they can more easily control the waterways that lead to the Suez Canal, especially the Bab El-Mandeb. The relationship between market ideology and 'the failed state': Through 'free market' ideology, the World Bank destroyed the barter economy of Somalia in the 1980s, directly causing the famines of the 1980s. Standard of living did go down or was unchanged. Economic growth = displace workers = frictional unemployment = workers moved from countryside to city = increase both demand for labor (economic growth) and supply of labor (displaced workers) in the city = no change in real wages. Increase in real wages = increase consumption = increase in standards of living SO YES STIGLITZ WAS RIGHT

I do like Stiglitz's writing (I'm just now reading his "The Price of Inequality" but I have to admit that I do not like his presentations. He just seems a bit too awkward all the time.

@hoomelemele keep your idiocy to yourself.

i like stiglitz, but as a speaker he seems like he's suffering constipation. i suggest he drink a strong cup of strong coffee, blow it out in the toilet, feel better and perk up the thinking and chatting process, he'd give a much better speech
