Over the three-day event, 130 experts and political analysts from 35 countries examined current issues concerning development of international relations, internal political organisation, the economy, demography, and technology. The participants looked, in particular, at ways to mitigate the consequences of radical changes on the global political map and the crisis in democratic systems and their work, and discussed development roads for Russia-EU relations and what the global system might look like in 10 years’ time. The final session was also attended by former President of Finland Tarja Halonen, former President of Austria Heinz Fischer, and former President of South Africa Thabo Mbeki. Thomas Gomart: In September 2014, at the Valdai Club, you described the relations between Ukraine and Russia with the following sentence: “Two countries, one people”. Today, how would you describe the relations between the two countries? Thank you very much. Vladimir Putin: I will not go into who is to blame for what now. I have always considered, and still do today, that Russians and Ukrainians are really one people. There are people who hold radical nationalist views both in Russia and in Ukraine. But overall, for the majority, we are one people, a people who share a common history and culture and are ethnically close. First we were divided, then we were set against each other, but we are not to blame for this. We must find our own way out of this situation. As for me, аmericans in this case, we need to say them " thanks". Finally, they opened the eyes to many russians, belorussians on their neighbors. Traitors never love. Ukraine has betrayed their historical ancestors and 1000 years of history for a package of cookies from Victoria Nuland. They did a choose, not americans .

I really agree, I know many things about history and for me too Russians and Ukrainians are the SAME PEOPLE. I am italian and I can see the esame differece between our people from North and South Italy! The culture and the roots are the same ROMAN-LATIN ! :-)

Let's just ignore mounting evidence of Russian involvement in the Ukraine annexation movement. Russia has the same imperialist ideals as my corrupt government here in the states. I love Putin ,but with this statement he is a fucking hypocrite ,we Romanians and Moldavians are one people as well,why the fuck he kept us divided ? There should be no Russians in Moldavia,yet for years he tried to keep it for himself. If he was a bit open minded years ago,maybe now he had 30 million people cheering for Russia instead being slaves to western powers. I don't condemn him but you can't say that Russians and Ukrainians are same people when you isolated others from their own. I like his policies towards the terrorist state of usa but this is utterly bullshit and hypocrisy

wow what an apparently great guy. If he hadn't defrauded the ukrainian elections with an agent that promised to join the EU and then did the exact opposite of that and got closer to russia against the people's wishes and then sent russian military disguised as "mercenaires" to kill ukranian citizens that were protesting against said agent a few years ago I would've believed this load of shit he just threw. Ukraine couldn't wish to be further away from russia.
