Reimagining Capitalism

Despite its many remarkable achievements, modern capitalism is driving our global economy along an unsustainable path. The purpose of finance and investing is now primarily to grow financial capital, but often at the expense of the well-being of the planet and society as a whole. This is evident in an ever-widening global wealth gap and in the twin crises of natural resource depletion and climate change. Moving beyond this diagnosis, non-partisan think tank Capital Institute is calling on business leaders and policymakers to fundamentally rethink economics and how our free enterprise system operates. They’re advocating a shift to the next stage of capitalism—Regenerative Capitalism—that operates from a deeper mission than mere financial profitability, with the goal of promoting the long-term health and well-being of our human communities and the planet. In this presentation, John Fullerton explores the eight key principles of a regenerative economy and share solutions currently being applied by real-world businesses.

Great content, but I wish he relied less on notes. He basically read aloud the whole time.

I have heard several progressive thinkers struggle with what the new paradigm should look like. I think you have it and it is very exciting. Some of the attempts within the new paradigm like Regenerative Banking are nobel but they do not address the rules of the larger system. They rely on a few good people doing the right thing. To make a difference that will create a sustainable economy, we need big structural changes. System- wide changes that make it easy for everyone to do the right thing and difficult to do the wrong thing. Such things might be worker-owed coops or public banking or structural changes in our deb- based money system. Your paradigm is the story we need. How do we use it is get structural change on the ground?
