Civil and environmental engineers apply cutting-edge science to design, build, and maintain essential infrastructure in our communities. This infrastructure is the backbone of our global economy. Examples include: housing, structures, roads, railways, bridges, dams, water supply systems, waste treatment facilities and energy production. The department has strong links with industry and five affiliated Centres: the Wind Engineering, Energy and Environment Research Institute (WindEEE), Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel Laboratory (BLWTL), Centre for Environment and Sustainability, Geotechnical Research Centre (GRC), and Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR). The broad and comprehensive education Western Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate students receive allows them to choose employment in a wide range of sectors including: private consulting, municipalities, provincial and federal governments, and resource and energy companies.
