It occurs to me that the economic reforms of the New Deal had a lot to do with keeping things small and that those reforms worked pretty well until about the 1970's. But in the 30's and 40's there was the recognition that businesses should not be allowed to get overly big and powerful. Most markets operated under the constraints of the Sherman Anti-trust act that basically said that these businesses should just not get big enough to dominate more than a small share of any market - any more than perhaps 5% was considered worrisome.
This gave our country a lot of diversity - every town had its own shops with their own signs. A stationary store in Portland Maine looked a lot different from one in Portland Oregon and they treated customers differently. Today if you were to be suddenly dropped into just about any town in the country it would look quite a lot like any other town. You'd see McDonald's, Burger King, Staples, Home Depot etc. It would be hard to know where you were by just looking around.
But there were some monopolies. Where the government recognized that big business served the public's interest, they were allowed to flourish. Mostly this was in shipping and communications industries, but even in these cases there was always an effort to retain some competition so as to avoid total dominance by a single company. A company like AT&T was allowed to dominate the telephone industry, but it was not allowed to take over all of the local telephone companies. And AT&T was not allowed to get into the business of making small appliances, newspapers or radio stations.
Maybe there is a better way to do this than with government regulation, but that approach did work for several decades. And the Sherman Anti-trust Act is still on the books; it just needs to be dusted off and enforced once again. -

Just said that to someone about having a 200 million buck house...RIDICULOUS who the hell needs that? How about a 2 million buck house and a huge chunk of that money to feed the homeless, to give food to the poor, to have a home built for thousands NOT one for millions or billionaires! Our nation is OUT OF CONTROL!!!

"I see the big problem and unless it's addressed immediately it will continue as being one, lack of transparency in how corporations work so closely with the government and also lack of oversight by our government which I think many people are becoming aware of, especially with some of the Snowden revelations."
This story validates my suspicion...! -
Again, very inspiring. Thank you.
