In Europe’s Shadow is the story of an ideological and geographic frontier, necessary to to truly understand the crisis with Russia, and within Europe itself. Kaplan will investigate at De Balie the current European crises. How should we look at the future of alliances such as the NATO? What does Kaplan think about European leadership? And what can we say about the frontier countries such as Romania – between Russia and the West? After Kaplan's keynote speech there will be a conversation with Paul Brill (journalist, De Volkskrant). Robert D. Kaplan is the author of sixteen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including In Europe's Shadow, Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, Balkan Ghosts, and Eastward to Tartary. He is a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security in Washington and a contributing editor at The Atlantic, where his work has appeared for three decades. He was chief geopolitical analyst at Stratfor, a visiting professor at the United States Naval Academy, and a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board, appointed by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Kaplan over Duister Europa In zijn nieuwe boek Duister Europa reist Robert Kaplan door Roemenië, Moldavië, Oekraïne, Bulgarije en Hongarije. Het zijn volgens hem de nieuwe brandpunten van de Europese geo- en veiligheidspolitiek. Terwijl de NAVO desintegreert en men druk is met de bestrijding van het islamitisch extremisme in Noord-Afrika en het Midden-Oosten, voert Poetin de druk op dit gebied steeds verder op. In De Balie gaat Kaplan dieper in op de huidige crises in Europa. Wat betekent dit voor huidige bondgenootschappen als de NAVO? Hoe kijkt men vanuit de Verenigde Staten naar Europees leiderschap? Na afloop van Kaplans lezing vindt er een nagesprek plaats met Paul Brill, buitenlandcolumnist van De Volkskrant. Over Robert D. Kaplan Robert D.
