Strong dollar or weak dollar: falling or rising: US emotions. Global Economy Speaker - Keynote
Economy | Information | History | Online | Facts | World | Global | Money
http://www.globalchange.com Bob McTeer (formerly part of Federal Reserve Board) has talked about possibility of a weaker dollar and why important in stimulating growth. Had a negative reaction - rise or fall of dollar - from some of American public. Dollar and exchange rate fall: trade imbalance, dollar comptetitiveness, exports growth, balance of payments impact on dollar value. Behaviour of Sovereign Wealth Funds and impact on dollar exchange rate, basket of currencies. Switch from Dollars to Euros. Foreign direct investment impact on dollar value. Inward capital flows support dollar. Risk of dollar crash, depression, recession. Why do people blame Alan Greenspan for the sub-prime crisis and dollar value today? He lead the Federal Reserve Board during the dot-com crash, 9/11 and following years when interest rates in the US fell as low as 1% and America came close to deflation. These low interest years are now blamed for the housing boom, the flood of bad loans and the sub-prime crisis. But is this fair criticism of past economic events in America, with money supply issues, rising unemployment, falling or static economic output in early 2002? Its now June 2009 and the US dollar continues to weaken. The Fed prints more $ and now the president wants the Fed to police companies that pose a systemic risk to the financial system. And now we are beginning to see the effects of defaults on commerical loans. I like Dr Dixon he tells the truth and that is all that needs to be told. My own opinion??? By August 2009 the DJI will be around 4500.

Many people would agree with you - as also about the gradual process of revaluation.

The tide has changed and this will take time, and the U.S. dollar is concidered high right now but big money needs to move out slow to not cause a rush for the exits. Banking greed and trillions of debt have the bank industry in big trouble which has so much more to work through. I see the U.S. dollar losing 20% by mid 2010

It is hard to compare decades ago with now. There are many differences not just the exchange rate. Patrick Dixon

I don't think the UK economy was in such a bad condition decades ago when the pound was strong. And neither was the US economy when the dollar index was much higher. Ask the Italians about the merits of a weak currency policy and the imbalances and inefficiencies that such a policy produces.

Thanks for your kind comments on this video about the strong dollar , weak dollar arguments. Patrick Dixon

But if those who hold huge dollar reserves sell at the same time the dollar will start to crash before they have time to end selling which is why these funds are being very cautious about the speed with which they switch away from dollars.
